Born in Cuneo in Piedmont, he taught at the Collegio Colonna e Finzi in Turin from 1823 to 1829, serving as assistant rabbi from 1827. Two years later, with the opening of the Padua Rabbinical College (which trained the majority of Italian rabbis) , he was made professor of Talmud. He gained renown for his teaching of homiletics and for his own preaching. Aside from his volumes of Hebrew poetry, Tal Yaldut and Eglei Tal, and numerous sermons, he published a commentary on the Pentateuch, translated and annotated the Psalms, and rendered the prayers according to Ashkenazi custom in Italian. (EJ, Kressel). OCLC lists 11 copies worldwide with only one copy in the United States. First few pages are soiled and dirty. Spine is starting. Edgewear. Fair condition. (IT-2-1).

Octavo (8 1/2 x 5 3/8"). 30pp. First edition of the publication of a sermon pronounced by Italian Rabbi Lelio della Torre on June 4, 1836 at the Oratorio Maggiore di Rito Tedesco degl'Israeliti di Padova (The synagogue of German rite in Padua). The sermon discusses the sociality of the Mosaic Law, also called Law of Moses, which refers primarily to the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible) traditionally believed to be written by Moses. Original wrappers missing. Sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Italian. Pages in overall good to very good condition. * Italian rabbi and educator, Lelio della Torre (1805-1871) was brought up by his uncle Sabbatai Elhanan Treves, a rabbi in Piedmont. From 1823 to 1829 he acted as tutor in Hebrew and in Biblical exegesis in the Collegio Colonna e Finzi founded in Turin by the Jewish community; and in 1827 he was appointed assistant rabbi. When the rabbinical college was founded in Padua in 1829, della Torre was appointed professor of Talmud, homiletics; and pastoral theology, which position he held until his death; in 1869 he occupied for several months, during a vacancy, the rabbinical chair of Padua. Cuneo, his native town, honored him by engraving his name on a bronze tablet among those of the most illustrious citizens of Italy.
