folded along fore- and lower edges so as to fit the volume, short tears in fore-margin from a previous folding, entering text but without loss, pp. 4, [Bound with:] Dryden (John) The Medall. A Satyre against Sedition. Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1682, FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, lightly browned, first and last leaves dusty, pp. [xii], 20, 4to, bound with 10 other tracts in contemporary, or nearly, panelled calf, from the Macclesfield Library with North Library book-plate, but no blindstamps, very good. A handsome volume of tracts, all but one from the years 1689-91, on politico-religious (anti-Catholic) topics. The writer, who describes himself as 'a passionate Lover both of Monarchy and the Church of England', appeals for an end to religious bickering amongst Protestants, since that only opens the way to the reinstatement of 'Popery.' The exception to the above categories is the first edition, first issue, of Dryden's The Medall. ESTC, although describing (and discussing at relative length) the variations, does not separate the two when it comes to giving locations: MacDonald refers to the rarity of the first, and Wise and Pforzheimer, for instance, have the second issue, while of the 6 copies listed in Folger's Hamnet, only one is first issue. The other tracts form a representative collection of the religious controversies of the time. They include tracts relating to Scotland (Covenanters) and Ireland, notably 'A Full and Impartial Account of all the Secret Consults, Negotiations, Stratagems, and Intriegues of the Romish Party in Ireland, from 1660, to this present year 1689. For the settlement of Popery in that kingdom' (ESTC R493, only 3 locations in the US). A full list may be had on request. One relates to Scotland, another to Ireland. The condition on the whole is good, though some are cut close, and a few outer leaves are soiled. (ESTC R2519; ESTC R17608, Macdonald 13ai).

True Examples of the Interposition of Providence, In the Discovery and Punishment of Murder. Bath: Sold by S. Hazard, (Printer to the Cheap Repository for Religious and Moral Tracts); by J. Marshall and R. White, London, [1795]. 12 pp. Woodcut illustration to title page. 12mo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in self-wrappers, edges untrimmed. Moderate toning, light foxing to margins of a few leaves, first and final leaves starting to separate but secure, upper corner of front wrapper lacking, small "90" written in ink at its head. $200. * Early edition. The Cheap Repository Tracts, issued from 1795-1817, were devised by More as an educational alternative to the sensational broadside and chapbook publications popular among the literate poor. Our tract is an abridgment of Fielding's Examples of the Interposition of Providence in the Detection and Punishment of Murder (1752), a short collection of anecdotes describing recent apprehensions of murderers with a religious theme. The work originally appeared in response to what many perceived as a notable increase in London murders; its publication was concurrent with the Murder Act of 1752, which introduced anatomization in the hopes that it would deter would-be murderers. The Cheap Repository abridgment was issued individually until 1797 and also appeared in yearly collections. The abridgment of Fielding's text is followed by an eight-stanza verse titled "A Prayer to God, that our National Crimes, may not bring down National Punishments." English Short-Title Catalogue N508833.

As John Cannon writes in Francis s entry in the Oxford DNB, The authorship of the Junius letters has been the subject of innumerable publications of various merit , with the case for Francis, first proposed by John Taylor in 1816, far the most probable . The present item is of double interest: handwriting analysis has played a significant part in a number of publications, e.g. The handwriting of Junius professionally investigated by Charles Chabot, expert; with preface and collateral evidence, by the Hon. Edward Twisleton (London, 1871). Hastings had spent much of the 1770s on the Supreme Council of Bengal, clashing (and fighting a duel with) Warren Hastings, and the subject of the letter is presumably Maurice s projected Indian Antiquities (7 vols, 1793-1800). 1p, foolscap 8vo. On recto of first leaf of bifolium, franked in customary fashion on reverse of second leaf, with seal in red wax and four postmarks, Isleworth twenty fourth June / 1791 / Revd. Mr. Maurice / Woodford / Essex , with Free / P: Francis. at bottom left. In fair condition, lightly aged, with 5cm vertical closed tear at head and traces of mount to blank area at head of reverse of second leaf. Folded for postage in the usual way. Signed P : Francis : . He has taken up the three Receipts at Elmsly , and will endeavour to promote Maurice s subscription as far as he can. The historical part of Holwells Tracts I believe is Exact, & may be depended on. The rest is doubtful; - certainly beyond my Knowledge. He has no Books that give any Account of the Raja of Berar , and suggests that Maurice consults a Tract of Mr. Orme s, called historical Fragments, printed for Nourse in 1782 . He ends by observing that Mr. Broughton Rouse has lately published a Treatise on the Tenure of landed Property in Bengal , which he believes Maurice would find very instructive on that Subject, if it comes within your plan . See Image.
