Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A scarce work of a Christian nature, in a half calf binding, with marbled boards. Comprising of: A sermon by Rev Philip Holland An address on the propriety of ordination with questions by Joseph Dawson and the answers by William Turner. A Prayer by William Wood A Charge by rev William Turner. This work was published at the request of the congregation of Protestant Dissenters in Hanover Square, Newcastle on Tyne. With errata leaf pasted to the final leaf. In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, rubbed to the spine and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Small cracks to the joints, moreso to the front joint. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to verso of front endpaper. An inscription above the bookplate is dated 1825. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned with occasional light spotting. Very Good. book.

On a 12mo bifolium of laid paper, with the printed advertisement on the recto of the first leaf, and the manuscript letter on the verso of the second. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper folded twice. The advertisement is headed 'Preparing for Publication, in One thick Volume, 8vo., Price 12s. Cloth,' and consists of a reproduction of the title-page. The letter, addressed to 'Dawson Turner Esq', states that, as a member of the Royal Society of Literature, Newnham has 'taken the liberty of addressing the present announcement to each one of my fellow members'. Should members 'be disposed individually to possess the volume', Newnham will be 'honored by receiving intentions to purchase a Copy'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient is not to be confused with his father the botanist Dawson Turner (1775-1858), whose entry contains the following regarding the son: During his final decade he lived in central London, and his untidy figure became familiar to the needy in hospitals and on the streets, whom he assisted with dedicated benevolence. He died in Charing Cross Hospital, London, on 29 January 1885, and was buried at Brompton cemetery. The present item was hence written within weeks of the recpient s death. Post Card printed with red halfpenny stamp. With St John s Wood postmark and one other, addressed to Revd Dr Dawson Turner / Charing Cross Hospital / Charing Cross / WC . In fair condition, lightly grubby and worn. Written lengthwise, with slight smudge at beginning of the N in Kerr s signature: 42 Grove St / Rgts Pk / NW / 9/1/85 / Thanks for interesting & useful pamphlet. / Norman Kerr .
