Hardcover. Zustand: Good. [Max Harzof, New York]. 1888 [i.e. c 1924], Pirated edition. Large octavo. 87 pages. Cloth-backed boards. Originally published as a result of an attack by the National Vigilance Association for obscene libels on Vizetelly's English translations of Zola. The authors from whose works these extracts are chosen include Shakespeare, Beaumont and Fletcher, Massinger, Dryden, Congreve, Otway, Vanbrugh, Defoe, Rossetti and Swinburne etc. The introduction comprises quotations from various authors, including Henry James and Andrew Lang, on the subject of literary censorship and a 2 page piece by Zola on the scope and purpose of the Rougon-Macquart series of novels. Loosely inserted is a 4 page leaflet ('Regina v. Vizetelly'):which is very slightly worn at top and bottom edges. The actual book is sound, slightly used near VG with a chip at the head of the spine and slight scuffing.creased at the edges. Text clean (but bawdy!).
