Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 369-379. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Light margins, a bit bumped, otherwise clean. - From the text: ZENO OF ELEA. In the Parmenides (127a-128e), Plato represents Zeno as being "close to forty" when Parmenides was 65 and when Socrates (born 469 b.C.) was a young man. Since there is no reason to think these relative dates are distorted by dramatic license or that Plato was misinformed, and since our other chronological data come from much later sources and are inconsistent among themselves, we have no choice but to assume that, as Plato implies, Zeno was born around 490 B.C. Since he wrote his book as "a young man" (Parmenides 128d), it is likely that he produced his paradoxes in the sixties, quite possibly in the early sixties, of the fifth century B.C. Plato speaks of only one book (and so does Simplicius, In Physica 139, 5). The attribution to him of more than one book by a late source (Suidas; in Diels and Kranz, 29 À 2) appears to be baseless. Of other facts concerning him, we can be certain only that he was a citizen of Elea, a familiar of Parmenides, and an adherent of his system, defending it against those who ridiculed it (Plato, Parmenides 128c, d). Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 195-108. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The first [of Zeno s arguments against motion which "give trouble to those who try to refute them"] says that there is no motion, because the moving [body] must reach the midpoint before the goal. (Aristotle, Phys. 239B 11 13). In the same way one should reply to those who pose Zeno s argument, [claiming] that it is always necessary to traverse the half, and these [halves] are infinite (i.e., infinitely numerous), while it is impossible to traverse infinites (Ibid., 263A 4-6). For there are many arguments contrary to common opinion, such as Zeno s that it is impossible to move or to traverse the race course. (Aristotle, Top. 160B 7-9). From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Somewhat light-marred, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The paradox of which I wish to speak is the one Plato presents in its most arresting form in Book Ten of the Republic: the Form of a bed is the "real" bed; the physical bed, the one made by the carpenter, is not "perfectly real," is "a shadowy sort of thing by comparison with reality." Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 3-18. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding rubbed and lightly stained, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: [1] For if, he says, [a] everything is always at rest when it is at a place equal to itself [.], [b] and the moving object is always [sc. at a place equal to itself] in the "now" [.], then the arrow in motion is motionless. (Aristotle, Phys. 239B5-7; for the text see Ross 657-58). [2] Zeno argues thus: [a] A moving thing moves either [A] in the place in which it is or [B] in the place in which it is not. [b] But it moves neither [A] in the place in which it is, nor [B] in the place in which it is not. Therefore, nothing moves. (Epiphanius, Adv. Haer. 3, 11; H. Diels, Doxo-graphi Graeci, 590). Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 454-460. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Glue residue on the cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Polus thinks that if one had to choose between ádikón and ádikásthai between wronging another and suffering wrong oneself the former would be the better option. But he admits that it would be the "uglier" (aischion) (Gorg., 474C). This admission (to which I shall refer as "T" hereafter), writes Professor E. R. Dodds, "proves fatal to his case, as Callicles will point out at 482D." Is this a correct diagnosis of Polus defeat? "Because of just this concession," says Callicles (loc. cit.), "he was tripped up in the argument and his mouth was stopped." Is this really true? So all modern commentators seem to have thought: I have not seen one word to the contrary in the literature. I believe that this opinion is mistaken. It is not Polus profession of T that proves fatal to his case, but his failure to keep his wits about him in the ensuing argument. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: In the Meno we have a chance, rare in Greek philosophy, to compare a philosophical theory with the data which make up its ostensible evidence. Meno asks if there is any way Socrates can show him that "learning" is recollecting. Socrates offers to produce the proof on the spot. Meno will see the slave-boy learning, and this will show that he was recollecting. I wish to make the most of this opportunity to examine the presented data before considering the theory. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 204-209. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A good and clean copy. - From the text: THOUGH NO THEORY of irregular atomic figures is ever mentioned in Plato s text, leading authorities on the Timaeus have maintained that we must suppose that he held it if we are to make sense of a chapter of his microphysiology, the one that deals with the mechanism of the sense of smell. Let us review the main points. Plato takes the following to be well-established empirical truths: Pure air does not smell; if we inhale air through a filter we will see that it is odorless (66E 5-7). Nor does any other kind of matter smell when it is in a stable state, but only when disintegrating, "liquefying or decomposing or melting or volatilizing" (66D 7-8). The theory Plato thinks explains these data includes two main theses. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 1-35. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover slightly rubbed, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: That isonomia was so closely associated with democracy that it even served as a name for that constitution before demokratia came into use is scarcely a recent thesis. But it was brought to the attention of scholars with renewed force shortly after the War by three able essays, published within four years of one another: "Demokratia", by A. Debrunner (1947); "Cleisthenes and the Development of the Theory of Democracy at Athens", by J. A. 0. Larsen (1948); "Origins of Democracy", by V. Ehrenberg (1950). But even before the third of them appeared, emphatic dissent from this thesis was voiced by a distinguished historian, the late A. W. Gomme. In a brief review of the Festschrift in which Larsen s paper had been published, he wrote in his characteristically lucid and forthright manner: "Isonomia, I still think, means a constitutional regime, whether oligarchic or democratic, the rule of order, the contrary of the irresponsible tyranny; a term that might have been used by both parties that were opposed to Hippias." Gomme gave no evidence at the time to support this pronouncement; he was reserving it doubtless for the second volume of his Historical Commentary on Thucydides. So I took no account of his opinion in a paper on "Isonomia" I published in 1953. I did allude in it to the logically related view that isonomia meant no more than equality before the law. This had enjoyed considerable currency at one time. - Wikipedia: Gregory Vlastos (July 27, 1907 October 12, 1991) was a preeminent scholar of ancient philosophy, and author of many works on Plato and Socrates. He transformed the analysis of classical philosophy by applying techniques of modern analytic philosophy to restate and evaluate the views of Socrates and Plato.
