Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). A very scarce work by W. H. Dilworth exploring the life and literary career of Jonathan Swift, of 'Gulliver's Travels' fame. A biographical account of the life of Dr. Johnathon Swift by W. H. Dilworth. ESTC citation number T84013. Lacking the final two pages of publisher's advertisements (ESTC). Rebacked with a leather backstrip, with the original paper covered boards preserved. The original spine label (torn in two parts) is loosely inserted into the volume. Jonathon Swift was an author and cleric, who was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. He was known for writing under several pseudonyms, but by far his most recognisable pen-name would be Lemuel Gulliver. 'Gulliver's Travels' as they would come to be known, saw Swift's fictional explorer some across unusual countries and people. Swift was also noted as having a fractious relationship with Queen Anne. Having taken dislike his work 'A Tale of a Tub', the monarch actively prevented Swift from gaining his desired position within the clergy. Instead he secured a smaller appointment at the Deanery of St Patrick's much to the Queens dismay. Once the Tory lost power, Swift was placed in a vulnerable position, having made an enemy of the monarch, and decided to leave England for Ireland. This particular biography of Swift's life is written by W. H. Dilworth. Rebacked, with the original boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Heavy rubbing to the extremities, with patches of rubbing to both the front and rear board. Handling marks to both the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers, with the front endpaper partially detached to the tail. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly cockled and age toned throughout. The original spine label is torn in two parts and is loosely inserted into the volume. Very Good Indeed. book.

Two vols. in one, 12mo., pp. [4], 127, [1]; 130, no title-page to second volume (as issued), with a half-title to volume I; a very good copy in the original pink-red boards, rubbed, free endpapers torn away.First edition, very scarce, of a history of the conquistadores for young readers, loosely derived from Antonio Solís de Ribadeneyra's Historia de la Conquista de México. Contrary to the suggestion of the British Library catalogue, it is not a reprint of the text that had appeared in Smollet's A Compendium of authentic and entertaining Voyages (1756), though the description of the voyage of Vasco de Gama (II, 101-130) is the same. Little is known of Dilworth, despite his authorship of numerous digests of history for younger readers in the 1750s, including one of Pizarro's conquest of Peru, as well as biographies of Pope and Swift and a Complete Letter-Writer that saw numerous editions in America.ESTC shows five copies, of which only Kent State and John Carter Brown have volume II. There are also complete copies at Yale and Newberry. Sabin 20184. Language: English.
