Erstausgabe
Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Not stated (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this profusely illustrated two volume set regarding shooting, complete with many illustrations, several of which are folding. With copious publisher's advertisements to the rear of both volumes. The first edition. Complete in two volumes and presented in the original green cloth. Uncommon. Profusely illustrated with many full page and vignette illustrations, eight of which are folding. John Henry Walsh was an English sports writer, who often wrote under the pseudonym 'Stonehenge'. After working as a surgeon for a number of years, he resigned his position in order to focus upon his passion for rural sports, publishing his first work on the subject, entitled 'The Greyhound'. He is perhaps best known for his work entitled ,Manual of British Rural Sports, published in 1856. He later went on to become the editor of The Field magazine, at which point he began using his pseudonym 'Stonehenge'. This fascinating work focuses upon weaponry used for out door pursuits and is a thorough and detailed exegesis on the subject. Many demonstrative vignette and full page illustrations make the work a still highly useful work. His work, particularly in relation to sporting firearms is still considered to be highly stimulating and beneficial. In the original cloth binding with gilt detail to the spine. Externally very smart with slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Slight shelf wear to the extremities. The odd light mark to the boards. Small area of damp staining to the front board of volume one. Hinges have been professionally reinforced. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning due to paper used. Contemporary ink inscription to verso of frontispiece and half title. Large closed tear to folding plate facing page 404 of volume two, with evidence of previous tape repair. Very Good. book.
