12mo, pp. [iv], xix, [i], 5-170; with vignette on title; contemporary calf, spine gilt (minor wear, lacks label). First Dublin edition. This inexpensive Irish edition, no doubt unauthorised, does not contain West's long dissertation on the Olympic games; among the other translations appearing in the London quarto, only the ode of Horace has been preserved. Provenance. Signature on a flyleaf of Thomas Vokes, dated 1758. Another inscription has been erased from the title verso.

Folio, pp. [iv], 12; first leaf (the advertisement to the poem) torn into the text, but nothing lost; some dust-soiling to margins, else a fine copy in modern wrappers. One of the earliest poems in the neo-Spenserian movement of the middle of the century, complete with a long prefatory advertisement relating the story of how the poem was given to a friend in Ireland by a descendant of Spenser. The true authorship was revealed in Dodsley's Miscellany, where it was given the title 'On the abuse of travelling', the theme of the poem being that too much Italianizing of an Englishman is the ruin of him. 4to, pp. 64; disbound. First edition: a long poem, written in the form of a masque, though clearly not intended for performance. The drama is set in Windsor Park, outside the Castle, at the time of Edward III. 'His Institution of the Garter (1742) is written with sufficient knowledge of the manner that prevailed in the age to which it is referred, and with great elegance of diction; but, for want of a process of events, neither knowledge nor elegance preserve the reader from weariness' (Samuel Johnson). 4to, pp. [xxviii], ccvi, [ii], 176, 175-315, [1] blank, [2] advertisements; contemporary mottled calf, spine ruled in gilt (some wear, upper joint cracked, but firm, lacks label). First edition. Gilbert West (1703-1756) was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. After receiving his degree he served in the army for a time, but decided to give up his commission to assume a civil post under Lord Townshend, then secretary of state. Eventually he retired on a small income to the village of West Wickham in Kent, where, as Samuel Johnson said of him, 'he devoted himself to learning, and to piety'. West had many distinguished family connections, including both his cousin George Lyttelton, the politician and poet, and William Pitt; both men visited West on occasion, to escape the hurly-burly of London life. He was also related to the bluestocking Elizabeth Montagu, with whom he corresponded. West became a good friend of Alexander Pope; he and Pope, along with Lyttelton, spent part of the summer in 1735 at Lord Bathurst's estate at Cirencester, and he visited Pope at Twickenham in 1741 and 1743. This translation of Pindar is West's most important literary achievement, and was widely admired by his contemporaries; his choice of subject may owe something to his father, who published an edition of Pindar in 1697. The long prefatory essay on the Olympic games was quickly recognized as a work of considerable originality. 'While the translation itself is conventionally elegant, West's notes mark a breakthrough in the reading of the odes in terms of their historical occasion, and the dissertation, praised by Gibbon, offers a rare eighteenth-century appreciation of the cultural and political significance of sport' (ODNB). 'Of his translations I have only compared the first Olympick Ode with the original, and found my expectation surpassed, both by its elegance and its exactness A work of this kind must, in a minute examination, discover many imperfections; but West's version, so far as I have considered it, appears to be the product of great labour and great abilities' (Johnson, Lives of the Poets). The volume concludes with a number of other translations, including an ode of Horace, a play by Euripides (Iphegenia in Tauris), verses of Apollonius Rhodius, and a dialogue of Plato. Of particular significance is The Triumphs of the Gout, from the Greek of Lucian; West himself suffered badly from gout. Foxon p. 887; Bowyer Ledgers 3554 the print run was 750 copies.

Erstausgabe
Folio, pp. [iv], 12; a few minor spots, but a very fine copy in original condition, entirely uncut, and stitched, as issued. First edition. This was Gilbert West's second publication, and one of the earliest poems in the neo-Spenserian movement of the mid-18th century. The poem is, of course, an imitation of Spenser, though a long Advertisement, on a leaf facing the title-page, purports to trace the poem to one of Spenser's descendants, via a friend in Ireland. The true authorship was revealed in Dodsley's Miscellany, where it was given the title 'On the Abuse of Travelling', warning against an Englishman adopting excessively Italianate manners as the Advertisement says, 'Inglese Italianato e un Diavolo incarnato'. Samuel Johnson had reservations about West's use of archaic metre, which led to remarks on the aim of poetry in general: 'His Imitations of Spenser are very successfully performed, both with respect to the metre, the language, and the fiction; and being engaged at once by the excellence of the sentiments, and the artifice of the copy, the mind has two amusements together. But such compositions are not to be reckoned among the great achievements of intellect, because their effect is local and temporary; the appeal not to reason or passion, but to memory, and presuppose an accidental or artificial state of mind. An imitation of Spenser is nothing to a reader, however acute, by whom Spenser has never been perused. Works of this kind may deserve praise, as proofs of great industry, and great nicety of observations; but the highest praise, the praise of genius, they cannot claim. The noblest beauties of art are those of which the effect is co-extended with rational nature, or at least with the whole circle of polished life; what is less than this can be only pretty, the plaything of fashion, and the amusement of a day.' Foxon W357. This copy may perhaps be on fine paper, as it bears a large medallion watermark not mentioned by Foxon.

Two works in one volume, 4to, pp. 52; [ii], 28; without the half title to the second work; but a very attractive volume in contemporary smooth calf, with morocco label: 'West's Poems'. First editions. Gilbert West (1703-1756) was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and was a nephew of Lord Cobham, creator of the gardens at Stowe. He was an ardent Spenserian, and had already published an anonymous imitation (A Canto of the Fairy Queen) in 1739. His poem Education not a promising subject for another attempt at copying Spenser, one would have thought describes the wanderings of a 'gentle knight' and his son, who are accompanied by a palmer, or pilgrim, commonly identified as a representation of John Locke. At the end of the poem they encounter a magical structure adorned with statues of great people, which (in a lengthy footnote) West explains as an allegory of the Biographia Britannia, 'that useful and entertaining work' which 'deserves, in my Opinion, to be encouraged by all, who have at Heart the Honour of their Country'. The second work in this volume is another imitation and continuation of The Faerie Queene, published by the same bookseller, George Hawkins, as had published West's in 1739 and perhaps intended as a continuation of it. There is no reason to think West the author of this second imitation (although it's notable that this volume is labelled 'West's Poems'). It is often attributed to the literary scholar John Upton (1707-60), following an inscription in a copy at the Bodleian; but although Upton published a critical edition of The Faerie Queene in 1758, he is not known as a writer of original verse, and the ascription seems a bit unlikely. In the Lives of the Poets, Johnson makes some acute observations on West's Spenserian poems: His Imitations of Spenser are very successfully performed, both with respect to the metre, the language, and the fiction; and being engaged at once by the excellence of the sentiments, and the artifice of the copy, the mind has two amusements together. But such compositions are not to be reckoned among the great atchievements of intellect, because their effect is local and temporary; they appeal not to reason or passion, but to memory, and presuppose an accidental or artificial state of mind. Works of this kind may deserve praise, as proofs of great industry, and great nicety of observation; but the highest praise, the praise of genius, they cannot claim. The noblest beauties of art are those of which the effect is co-extended with rational nature, or at least with the whole circle of polished life; what is less than this can by only pretty, the plaything of fashion, and the amusement of a day.
