, Weyl, Hermann, 1885-1955. Gruppentheorie und Quantenmechanik. Leipzig, S. Hirzel, 1928, viii, 288pp., worn and wobbly red cloth, torn at top 4cm along spine, front hinge wobbly, with substantive comments in pencil on about 10 pages by ***, two previous owners' names in ink on title page. Weyl embodies the collaboration of mathematics and physics in this period. The second revised edition of 1931 was expanded and reworked and is the basis for subsequent reprints. It reflects changes in quantum theory (specifically due to Dirac). Here, the first edition. The mathematical comments are clearly in the previous owner's hand, a well-known physicist. An earlier previous owner: Egon Orowan, 1902-1989, Hungarian-born physicist and professor of mechanical engineering who worked after 1933 in England, then from 1950 at MIT.

8vo. 2 2/3 pp. Double sheet. With holograph addressed envelope. To Fausto Pitigliani in Rome: It was such a pleasure for me to receive your kind letter and congratulations. I have the same feeling: our meeting at Le Prese meant more than a shore-lives acquaintance in a summer resort. At that time I had no incline that I would remarry so soon; it seemed much more likely that I would settle as a hermit on the sores of the lake of Poschiaro. But my fate began to overtake me right after I left Le Prese. I tell you, I am a very, very lucky man. I hope my example will accelerate a similar development in your case! Two days ago I visited Alp Grindel with my wife on a day of perfect sunshine, and there we glanced down at Le Prese. I also visited Mrs. Thön-Mirani here at Celerina. She has lost her elder daughter since last summer.I have to be back in Princeton at the end of this monthand thus there is no time to visit Rome now. But I shall be back in summer, and it would be nice indeed if then an opportunity arose to see you and your girls somewhere in Italy.
