With an ink inscription from Newport J. D. White, dated 3rd Sept 1927. This book is four biographical sketches of important Dublin and Irish men, including Jeremy Taylor, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dublin and Elias Bouhéreau, the first Public Librarian in Ireland. Newport John Davis White was Professor of Biblical Greek and Archishop King's Professor in the University of Dublin, Canon of St. Patrick's and the Librarian of Archbishop Marsh's Library in Dublin. Élie (or Elias) Bouhéreau,1643 1719, was a French Huguenot refugee in Ireland and the first librarian of Marsh's Library in Dublin.Bouhéreau, according to the burial register of the Conformist Huguenot churches in Dublin, was a "distinguished medical doctor and zealous Protestant of La Rochelle, very knowledgeable and very highly regarded." He served in Ireland with Ruvigny when Ruvigny was Lord Justice of Ireland, 1697-1701. In 1701 he was made librarian of Marsh"s library. Narcissus Marsh, 1638 1713, was an English clergyman who was successively Church of Ireland Bishop of Ferns, Archbishop of Cashel, Archbishop of Dublin and Archbishop of Armagh. In 1679 he was appointed provost of Trinity College, Dublin, where he did much to encourage the study of the Irish language. He helped to found the Dublin Philosophical Society. Jeremy Taylor, 1613 1667, was a clergyman in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression and was often presented as a model of prose writing. He is remembered in the Church of England's calendar of saints with a Lesser Festival on 13 August. In the publisher's original binding. Externally generally smart, some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild discolouration to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
