Zustand: Gut. IX, 333 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Dust jacket under plastic rubbed and scuffed, pencil marking and small stain on endpaper, otherwise very good. / Schutzumschlag unter Folie berieben und bestoßen, Bleistiftanmerkung und kleiner Fleck auf Vorsatzblatt, sonst sehr gut. - The comic hero is the central theme of this book, which may be seen as part three of a kind of trilogy on classical Greek heroism, the other two studies being the author s previous books on the tragic hero in Sophocles and the epic hero in Homer. Like his somber brothers the comic hero towers over life, but his methods are those of a resourceful and unscrupulous operator; he is also a visionary who transcends and transforms a threatening society by imposing upon it a fantasy whose essence is the boundless and satisfying supremacy of himself. "Comedy," says Aristotle, "is an imitation of the inferior sort of people"; but in the case of the Aristophanic hero, the point of the action lies precisely in this inferior fellow s conflict with, and victory over, society. Throughout his analysis Mr. Whitman makes use of the modern Greek concept of poneria, which best describes the devious and delightful wickedness by which the hero survives and comes out on top. The idea of the grotesque also is reinterpreted somewhat and applied to the comic hero s kinship at once with the gods and the lower animals. Rejecting all theories that Aristophanes was a social or political reformer, Mr. Whitman refrains from further comment on the well-combed fields of topical reference, immediate historical purport, or the supposed moral allegories of the satirist; he concentrates rather on the neglected problem of Aristophanes as poet, dramatic artist, and myth-maker for his own times. The liberating vision of the Aristophanic hero casts him in the role of redeemer for the Athenian common man, who was becoming progressively more alienated by the imperial society of the late fifth century b.c. The author comments on the comic hero s literary forebears, beginning with Homer, as well as on a descendant in the modern Greek shadow theater. Individual studies of Acharnians, Knights, Peace, Clouds, Wasps, Birds, Lysistrata, Thesmophoriazusae, and Frogs center on the vision of the protagonist. At the same time these plays are analyzed as dramatic patterns of fantastic and realistic imagery. The final chapter deals with the structure of fantasy itself, its relation to surrealism and Huizinga s theory of play, and to its role in the art of Aristophanes. An appendix on modern Greek shadow theater attempts to draw lines of possible connection between the Old Comic spirit and modernity. - Mr. Whitman is Professor of Greek and Latin at Harvard University. His previous publications include Orpheus and the Moon Craters, a book of poems; Sophocles: A Study of Heroic Humanism; and Homer and the Heroic Tradition.
