Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). Fourteen volumes of the Quarterly Review, a nineteenth century magazine containing cultural commentary and miscellany Fourteen volumes of the Quarterly Review, a periodical published between December 1949 and April 1872 by London publishing house John Murray. Established in 1809, the Quarterly Review published miscellany including literary essays, cultural commentary, political opinion, agricultural reports, biographies, and reviews. This collection includes writings on Kew Gardens, meteors and shooting stars, Charles Napier, American humour, and the history of Northamptonshire. Volumes 86, 87, 92 111, 122, and 127 have spine labels. All volumes except 132 and 127 have a prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. The books belonged to Conservative Party politician James Bourne, as the bookplate depicts the crest and motto of the Bourne Baronetcy of Hackinsall Hall in County Palatine of Lancaster. The Baronetage was created in 1880 for the politician, and the title became extinct on the death of his son in 1883. Bourne was also Colonel of the 4th brigade Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, and in volume 132 the bookplate names him as Colonel Bourne. Prior owner's sticker to the front paste down of volume 127, 'George Kelson Stothers'. Binders sticker to rear paste down of volume 105. Bound by 'Fraser, 33 Peters Lane, Liverpool'. In a quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. All volumes have some light wear to the extremities, and are a little worn to the boards and joints, particularly volumes 103 and 127, which have small tears in the calf at the rear joint and front joint respectively. Volumes 86-87, 89, 92, 111, 122 and 127 all have spine labels, although the label is tender to volume 111. Volumes 87 and 90 have lost some calf to to the head of the spine, and volumes 99 and 104 are a little more worn to the head and tail than the rest in the collection. The front hinge is starting in volume 127, and the rear hinge is starting in volumes 88 and 132, whilst both are starting but firm to volume 87. The rear joint has failed to volume 92, so that the rear board is disbound, but present. Internally, generally firmly bound. Some light spotting to the front and rear of each volumes. Otherwise pages are generally clean. Good. book.
