Second edition, revised and with a new preface. Publisher's original blue cloth with a gilt portrait of Swedenborg to the upper board and titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with slight toning to the spine and a little rubbing to the extremities. The contents with a few pages roughly opened (causing tears to a handful of pages), pen underlining to a couple of pages of text and a little foxing to the prelims are otherwise in good order. An attractive copy of this biography of Swedenborg by one of his leading English disciples. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with titles in gilt to the spine. A very good copy, the binding square and tight with a little wear to the spine ends and bumping to the corners. The contents with a neat contemporary previous owner's inscription to both front endpapers and to the front pastedown, a very small chip to the fore-edge of the title page and scattered foxing to page edges are otherwise in very good order. James John Garth Wilkinson (1812-1899) was a homeopathic physician, social reformer, translator and editor of Swedenborg's works, as well as a writer on Swedenborgian topics. Also deeply influenced by the writings of William Blake, Wilkinson produced several of his own esoteric philosophical and medical works which won the admiration and friendship of figures including Henry James Sr., Ralph Waldo Emerson and Edward Maitland. In the present work, dedicated to Henry James Sr., Wilkinson presents his holistic conception of human health, reflecting on the interconnection of the physical and the spiritual. As he announces in the preface: "The knowledge of the human body.has no more necessary connection with physic, than with art, industry, philosophy, divinity, or any of the other occupations that we do in the body, and by the body". Throughout the work, therefore, he seeks "to register the cases in which the body expresses the soul". A nice example of a scarce title.
