First edition (to the best of our knowledge) of a wildly successful manual for household cooks. The Housekeeper's Instructor went into as many as seventeen editions over the following twenty years, with revisions by another editor. The collation of this printing is 456 + [18] (index} + [6] (subscribers' list); the latter is an indication of the first printing. The title page does not have "No. 112" as part of the address, and the stated fifth edition at least does include the street number, suggesting this form of title page is the earliest issue. Complete with all plates in the correct positions called for by the binder's instruction at the end of the index. The frontispiece is in the initial state. This copy is in a later period half-leather binding, with marbled endpapers and a few additional blanks at the beginning. Bookplate of Isabel J. Hirsch on the front pastedown. It was recently rebacked with a linen spine and paper title spine label. The book is hence very solid. The contents are in very good condition. An invaluable source for the domestic economy of the better off class in Britain at the end of the 18th century. The continuation of the title shows the further range of subjects covered: "Also, the method of preparing soups, hashes, and made dishes; with the whole art of confectionary, pickling, preserving, &c. Likewise the making and keeping in perfection British wines; and proper rules for brewing malt liquor, as well for family consumption as the regale of private visitants. To which Is added, The complete art of carving, illustrated with engravings, explaining, by proper references, the manner in which the young practitioner may acquit himself at table with elegance and ease. Likewise, bills of fare for every month in the year; with copper-plates, displaying the best manner of decorating a table; whereby every person will be enabled to add to the art of cookery the proper disposition of each article in its respective season. Together with directions for marketing, and the management of the kitchen and fruit-garden. The whole formed on so new a plan, that the inexperienced will be instructed, and the professed cook receive that information which has never been made known by any preceding publication.".
