Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A delightfully illustrated three volume edition of the works of Cowper, uniformly bound in straight grain morocco with gilt detailing. Bound in a lovely straight grain morocco, this is a charming and illustrated three volume set of the works of eighteenth century nature poet William Cowper. With volumes I and II published in 1811, with a frontispiece to each volume, five further plates to volume I, and one further plate to volume II. Collated, complete. The third volume, published in 1815, is not illustrated, but contains also 'his posthumous poetry and a sketch of his life', with this memoir being the work of his kinsman, John Johnson.A poet and hymnwriter, Cowper was one of the most popular poets of his day. Writing scenes of everyday life and the English countryside, and viewed as a forerunner to the Romantic poetry movement, Samuel Taylor Coleridge referred to his as 'the best modern poet'.After being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper found refuge in the fervent evangelical Christianity that is present in much of his poetry. With the armorial bookplate of H. P. Sperling of Norbury Park to the front pastedown of each volume. In full straight grain morocco bindings, with gilt detailing and blind tooling. Rubbing to front and rear joints of each volume, with small losses to the leather. Boards exceptionally lovely. Front joint of each volume starting, with boards holding firm. Bookplate to each front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to frontispieces and first few leaves of each volume, with pages otherwise bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot. Very Good. book.
