292 x 225 mm. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4"). xii, [2], 185, [3] pp. Very pleasing red morocco, covers with gilt border, raised bands, spine gilt in panels with fleurons at center and corners, gilt lettering, marbled endpapers. With numerous black & white illustrations, 32 of them full-page, and 12 COLOR PLATES mounted on heavy stock, all by W. Heath Robinson. â Occasional mild foxing, but an excellent copy, clean and bright internally, and in an unworn binding. This is an attractively bound copy of Shakespeare's most widely-performed comedy, with appropriately whimsical color plates and numerous black & white illustrations by William Heath Robinson. Featuring gorgeous coloring and an overall dream-like appearance, Robinson's plates are quite reminiscent of the work of fellow "Golden Age" illustrators Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham, and they are perfectly suited for a play about love and enchantment. The black & white illustrations, on the other hand, demonstrate Robinson's talent for caricature--a skill that he would continue to perfect throughout his career. Robinson (1872-1944) was born into a family of artists and illustrators, and, according to his autobiography, from an early age he knew that he "did not want to be anything else than an artist." Though he had at first set his mind to becoming a landscape painter, it was in the realm of book illustration and humorous drawings where Robinson found his greatest successes. He is best known for a series of cartoons illustrating absurdly complicated machines for accomplishing relatively easy tasks--in fact, they were so popular that the term "Heath Robinson contraption" became a part of modern parlance. The binding here adds more than a touch of luxury to an already lovely work.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. xxiv, 143 p., interspersed with plates. 26 cm. 40 tipped-in colour plates. Green cloth hardcover with gold impressing. Some rubbing to rear board and hinge. Spine ends a little softened. Foxing and occasional thumbing. Plate opposite p. 114 detached. William Heath Robinson, cartoonist and illustrator, is today remembered for drawings of ridiculously complicated machines. But Robinson's early career involved book illustration and he can be counted among the best of the Golden Age book illustrators. In Twelfth Night, his first large "gift book" assignment, his sense of humour is less obvious, but his love of romantic landscapes is very much evident. The 24-page description of the play is by famed literary critic Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.

First Heath Robinson edition, signed limited issue, number 66 of 350 copies, signed by the artist. Simon Heneage in the ODNB describes Heath Robinson's illustrations for this volume as "atmospheric". A contemporary review in The Graphic noted that "the new edition of Twelfth Night. has the advantage of the poetic insight and decorative skill which mark Mr. W. Heath Robinson's serious work. This year he shows a considerable advance in freedom and grace upon the book to which we refer. The coloured drawings. are instinct with the decorative spirit of the play". The Graphic, 24 October 1908, p. 492. Quarto. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, grey endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Illustrated title page, colour frontispiece and 39 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Heath Robinson. Signed limited edition, number 29 of 250 copies signed by the artist. The Athenaeum included the book as being "books published this week" on 24 October 1914, and it was issued in both a trade and a remarkably small signed limited edition. The Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art reviewed the volume in December 1914 and stated "the book. is an obvious prize for anyone who desires Shakespeare decorated and defined. Messrs. Constable, in format, printing, and binding, have, as usual, given to their work high quality and care". Alan Horne notes that "perhaps Robinson's best work was done for the 1913 Andersen, for A Midsummer Night's Dream and for two books for children which he wrote as well as illustrated - The Adventures of Uncle Lubin (1902) and Bill the Minder (1912)" (p. 373). Heath Robinson would later develop his individual style and draw ridiculous contraptions, thereby giving his name as a noun to the English language. The Athenaeum, 24 October 1914, p. 428; Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 19 December 1914, p. 635; Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, 1994. Quarto. Original parchment boards, spine and front cover lettered and with designs in gilt, top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Robinson. Bookseller's label to rear pastedown. Extremities a little bumped, consistent soiling to rear cover, browning to endpapers: a very good copy.
