Signed limited edition, number 235 of 350 copies signed by the artist. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was one of the most notable book illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Towards the end of his career, he fulfilled many commissions for illustrated editions "in larger formats and rather grandiose style for Heinemann and Hodder and Stoughton" (ODNB), as seen here. Describing this volume as "a delightful edition", The Sphere stated that "No artist of our time has so much grace or so much faculty for presenting the humours of life with delicacy and refinement as has Mr Hugh Thomson. His work forms an interesting balance to the more grim and fantastic but equally valuable efforts of Mr Arthur Rackham." The Sphere, 15 October 1910, p. 66. Octavo (272 x 225 mm). Late 20th-century half blue morocco by Frost and Co. of Bath, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands and compartments tooled in gilt, sides and corners trimmed with single rule in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Colour frontispiece and 39 coloured plates mounted on heavy brown paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Thomson. Minor splitting to front hinge, minor nick to one tissue guard: a near-fine copy.
