Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book is a professional military-intelligence officer's and a controversial insider's view of some of the greatest intelligence blunders of recent history. It includes the serious developments in government misuse of intelligence in the recent war with Iraq. Colonel John Hughes-Wilson analyses not just the events that conspire to cause disaster, but why crucial intelligence is so often ignored, misunderstood or spun by politicians and seasoned generals alike. This book analyses: how Hitler's intelligence staff misled him in a bid to outfox their Nazi Party rivals; the bureaucratic bungling behind Pearl Harbor; how in-fighting within American intelligence ensured they were taken off guard by the Viet Cong's 1968 Tet Offensive; how over confidence, political interference and deception facilitated Egypt and Syria's 1973 surprise attack on Israel; why a handful of marines and a London taxicab were all Britain had to defend the Falklands; the mistaken intelligence that allowed Saddam Hussein to remain in power until the second Iraq War of 2003; the truth behind the US failure to run a terrorist warning system before the 9/11 WTC bombing; and how governments are increasingly pressurising intelligence agencies to 'spin' the party-political line. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Marbled free and pasted endpapers. All edges gilt., Colonel Wilson was assisted by a number of the most eminent Palestine explorers such as, Canon Tristram, Charles Warren, M. Rogers, Reverand Seleh Merril, Stanley Lane-Poole and others. A stunning and exhaustive work documenting several areas in the Middle East, and overseen by Colonel Charles Wilson. Wilson (1836 - 1905) was a British military officer and geographer. Born in Liverpool, Wilson was schooled at St. David's. In 1855, he received a commission in the Royal Engineers. On Wilson?s return to England from his first trip to Palestine, the Palestinian Exploration Fund Committee employed him to conduct a 'feasibility study' for a planned Survey of Western Palestine and to mark appropriate sites for further exploration. In November 1865, Wilson and his group arrived in Beirut and traveled to Palestine, planning the Great Mosque of Damascus along the way. Wilson carried out scouting and survey work in Palestine from January to April 1866, with particular consideration to the archaeology and very old synagogues of the area. In 1868, Wilson participated in the Ordnance Survey of Sinai, along with Capt. H.S. Palmer. The account of their work includes Wilson?s chapters on the course of the Israelites and the prehistoric and Byzantine archaeology of area. He was awarded the Diploma of the International Geographical Congress in 1871, for his work in Jerusalem. In 1872, he was promoted to the Council of the Society of British Archaeology. In 1874 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. , Size : Small folio (320x248mm). , Each volume is illustrated with one engraved frontispiece and one illustrated vignette title, one title in red and black, eighteen (18) steel engravings and a profusion of large woodcuts ? all from original drawings by Harry Fenn and J.D. HARDCOVER, uniformly bound in the original publisher's richly decorated green cloth, gilt panelled and lettered, spine gilt, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. In about fine condition (occasionally some spotting; slight wear to spine ends.) A very handsome set, very well preserved. ~ Second edition, published in 3 volumes. It does not differ from the first edition, in four volumes, which was published in 1881. The publisher, James Virtue, seeking new marketing opportunities, substitute the line "In Four Volumes" with "In Three Volumes" and did not reissue the fourth volume, devoted to Sinai and Egypt. Other editions followed suit. Appleton of New York has published a two-volume version, rather crowded in comparison with the original, and indeed one that could not match the exceptionally fine, two large folios of the German edition that was published in 1833 under the direction of Georg Ebers and Hermann Guthe. Although it is Wilson who receives all the credit for this monumental work, it is the contribution of the authors whose work he edited that makes this 3-volume an opus of value. Distinguished Palestine explorers such as Canon Tristram, Charles Warren, M. Rogers, and notably Major Claude Reignier Conder, R.E. (1848-1910), as well as several others created the necessary balance between image and word. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. Noteworthy are the artists who produced them. Most of the original paintings were made by J. D. Woodward and Harry Fenn. Born in England in 1838, Fenn came at the age of 18 to the United States where he has achieved great success as an illustrator of books, was one of the founders of the American Watercolor Society, and has been one of its exhibitors nearly every year since its organization. Some of his best work is contained in "Picturesque America," "Picturesque Europe," and "Picturesque Palestine". A keen traveller, Fenn has travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and the Sinai Peninsula. Other artists include C. Werner and H. A. Harper. The engravings were executed by numerous outstanding craftsmen, noteworthy among them are C. Bertrand and E. Brandard. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. A fine set. [Total weight: 10 kg]. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague] I-6.
