Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A collection of the historical essays and recollections of Sir N. William Wraxall. With a frontispiece to volume I. Third edition, revised and corrected. Contaning: Part the First: From 1772 to 1780 Part the Second: From January 1781 to March 1782 Part the Third: From March 1782 to March 1784 Little is known of Wraxall's later years except that he was made a baronet by the prince regent in 1813. His Historical Memoirs appeared in 1815. Both they and the Posthumous Memoirs (1836) are very readable and have real historical value. Wraxall believed that the Government of the day, furious at his truthfulness, was behind a libel action which sent him to prison for three months in 1816. Hence the posthumous publication of the later memoirs. He died suddenly at Dover on 7 November 1831, whilst travelling to Naples. Complete in three volumes. Rebacked in calf with original board preserved. Externally, generally smart, though with some wear to the original leather and some rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting and offsetting from the frontispiece. Very Good. book.

Octavo; a little light spotting but a very nice copy in old half roan. An ironic (and sometimes biting) commentary on the political state of Britain by Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, including a savage attack on Lord Sydney and the First Fleet set for Botany Bay. Wraxall was a contemporary of Townshend in parliament, and the two men locked horns on a number of issues including the contentious scheme for a penal colony in New South Wales. This edition, the seventh "with additions", as well as the sixth edition of the same year, are the only two versions to contain the long passage on pages 77-83, which is in fact one of the earliest printed references to transportation to Botany Bay. Overall, Wraxall is scathing in his opinion of sending felons to the 'extreme verge of Nature' and likens the scheme to the fabled land of Lilliput by Swift. Lord Sydney comes under heavy fire; indeed Wraxall condemns him as downright incompetent in handling the most basic issues. Regarding the departure of the First Fleet, he writes 'was it not permitted to consult either reason, or naval experience, or humanity, in the time, chosen for their embarkation? Must the month of February be selected from the twelve, for the season of their departure? Does Lord Sydney recollect the fatal issue of Anson's, and of Pizarro's squadrons. If Lord Anson's experience and admonitions were insufficient: if Cook's more recent information were vain, even Robinson Crusoe would have taught him better.' Sydney's reputation as an able politician who became an insipid peer derives, to some extent, from the pithy appraisal that Wraxall included in his memoirs - that 'Tommy Townshend displayed very considerable talents. Lord Sydney, when removed to the Upper House of Parliament, seemed to have sunk into an ordinary man'. 'What can be said is that Sydney was perhaps mistaken in accepting a peerage and thus losing much of the influence that came from being a Commons man. He had been appointed by Rockingham - and retained by Shelburne and Pitt - for his debating skills, which were notable. His administrative skills, once in high office, were not so readily apparent.' (DNB). .

Traduit de l'anglais, de M. P., sur la septieme Édition. Par M. L. D. Paris : chez Hardouin & Gattey, 1787. Octavo (185 x 120 mm), disbound; pp. iv. [5]-76; a crisp, clean example. French translation of the seventh edition of a work attributed to Tory politician Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall, 1st Baronet (1751-1831),A short review of the political state of Great-Britain at the commencement of the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven (Ferguson, 28). Wraxall was a detractor of the British penal system in general, and a vehement opponent of the scheme for transportation to the proposed penal colony at Botany Bay in particular. The last few pages contain what are among the first references in print to transportation to Botany Bay, including scathing criticism of Lord Sydney. The translator, Louis Dutens (1730-1812), was a French writer who spent most of his life in Britain or in British service on the continent. He was both a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and a Fellow of the Royal Society. Octavo (185 x 120 mm), disbound; pp. 40; a crisp, clean example. French translation, also by Louis Dutens, of The people's answer to the court pamphlet: entitled a short review of the political state of Great Britain (London, 1787). This is a response to Wraxall's polemic against the British government, attributed to Whig statesman and Foreign Secretary, Charles James Fox (1749?1806), a fierce proponent of transportation.
