Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The Truth of the Christian Religion, by Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), was first published in 1627 and had a massive impact on Western culture. In advocating Christianity as the true revealed religion, Grotius intended his book for the Dutch laypeople who, at the height of the Dutch seaborne empire in the mid-seventeenth century, were increasingly coming into contact with non-Christians: pagans, Muslims, and Jews. With these encounters in mind, Grotius aimed to expound the claims of Christianity as the true revealed religion in straightforward language understandable by mariners, merchants, and lay-people lacking higher education. -- Arguing on rational, historical, and ethical grounds, Grotius asserted the agreement of Christianity with the conclusions of natural reason concerning the existence of God and his attributes, the authenticity and reliability of the Christian scriptures, and the morally excellent teaching contained especially in the New Testament. Yet while claiming the superiority of Christian doctrine and morality, Grotius also advocated religious toleration. As a man who endured persecution for his religious convictions, he rejected the use of any kind of violence, maintaining that only reason and dialogue should be employed to support the Christian religion because "truth is no other way to be defended but by truth." -- Among the Latin editions published after Grotius's death, the most important were those of Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736). The two parts added by Le Clerc to Grotius's original work became in their own right key documents of the debate on religious toleration. Liberty Fund presents John Clarke's 1743 English translation of Le Clerc's definitive Latin version of 1724. Enhanced by a new introduction, an extensive listing of authors and works cited by Grotius and Le Clerc, and new explanatory notes, this classic work is available once again to modern readers.
