(incl. list of plates), cc, [5]index, 185; 1 p.l., [187]-586, [12]index, [1 leaf]errata. 2 engraved title vignettes, 2 folding engraved linen-backed maps & 24 engraved plates (incl. frontis., 1 folding). An attractive set in early 19th century paneled russia by Winstanley of Manchester (ticket in both vols.), gilt inside dentelles, rebacked (light dampmark to inner margin at beginning of Vol. I, plates offset, occasional hint of foxing). First Edition of a classic work on the natural history of the northern regions of America, Europe, and Asia by one of the outstanding naturalists of the eighteenth century. The greater portion of the work is devoted to the animal and bird life of North America, with sections on California, Nootka Sound, Alaska, Hudson's Bay, Baffin Island, the Newfoundland fishery, Labrador, Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, &c. Also included is an account of the progress of discovery along the west, north and east coasts of Canada. Pennant himself never visited the regions described, but relied on information derived from the accounts of explorers (Cook, Hearne, &c.), communications with other learned zoologists, including Peter Simon Pallas, ad on specimens supplied from various private collections, such as that of Mr. Andrew Graham of Hudson's Bay. The text is attractively illustrated with a series of fine engraved plates. As is often the case, the present set is offered without the separately published Supplement (1787). Arctic Bib. 13291. Cox II 20. Casey Wood p. 516 & Freeman 2963 (both incorrectly calling for 23 plates). JCB II 2992. Lada-Mocarski 38. Sabin 59757. TPL 573 (also without supplement). Wickersham 6822-23. cfLande 1389.
