Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good- to very good condition. First edition. Octavo. xvi, 319pp., 16 plates. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Frontispiece. A history of the patriarchs and the kings, their successors from the creation to the crucifixion of Christ. Translated from the Syriac text of the British Museum MS. ADD. 25875. Contains list of plates and in-text illustrations at front. Illustrated with sixteen plates and eight in-text illustrations. "The present volume contains a complete translation of the Syriac text of the compendious history of the world from the Creation to the Crucifixion of our Lord, which is commonly known as "Me'árath Gazze," or the "Cave of the Treasures." In the Syriac title the composition of the work is attributed to Ap[h]rem Suryaya, i.e. Ephrem Syrus, or Ephraim the Syrian, who was born at Nisibis (?) soon after A.D. 306 and died in 373, but is now generally believed that the form in which we now have it is not older than the VIth century." Binding with light wear along edges, sunned on front cover and spine, with library markings, barcode on cover, sticker on spine, library bookplate and stamp on inside front cover, stamp on verso of title page and edges, library pocket on inside back cover. Text in English. With bibliography and extensive index at rear.
