Zustand: An excellent set. Five volumes, octavo; with 149 engraved portrait plates; contemporary binding of dark green straight grain morocco, ornately gilt; armorial bookplates. A very attractive set of this major literary work by Walpole: although his literary reputation rests principally upon his voluminous correspondence, he also produced a number of substantial books, including this with its useful collection of biographical accounts and engraved portraits. As a carefully researched and honest assessment of the literary contributions of a significant number of lesser-known writers (figures whose rank in society was generally greater than their reputations and abilities as authors), the work is of particular value. The set offered here is a appealing example of a decorated binding from the early nineteenth century. .

London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1759. 2 vols. 8vo, [vi], viii, [2], 247, [3, index]; [2], 250, [6] pp. engraved frontispiece and engraved plate of music opposite page 202 in volume 1. Contemporary red sheepskin, backstrips ornately gilt with thistle motif in compartments, olivo morocco labels. Joints a bit rubbed and worn but sound, slight chips to backstrip crowns, corners slightly worn, front free endpaper in each vol. partly detached, but an attractive set with the contemporary ownership inscription in both vols. "P. Griffin St. Edmund Hall Oxon." § Second edition. Walpole first published his catalogue in 1758 at his Strawberry Hill Press, and in the same year sold the copyright to Dodsley, who published this enlarged edition. Contemporary reviewers criticized weaknesses in Walpole's scholarship and his Whig bias but the work was nevertheless much read and discussed. Today it is perhaps all the more enjoyable for his slightly gossipy accounts of the lives and works of both well known and forgotten British authors. The authors are arranged chronologically; in the indexes they are grouped into Noble Authors, Peeresses, Scots Authors, and Irish Peers.

[6], viii, 247, [5]pp; [2], 250, [6]pp, frontispiece (engraving by Grignion of Earl Rivers and Caxton being presented to Edward IV), one engraved plate of music. 8vo. Some foxing & offset browning to e.ps, preliminary leaves & titlepages, otherwise a clean copy. Full contemporary sprinkled calf, raised & gilt banded spines, gilt devices, red morocco labels; sl. wear to one headcap otherwise a v.g. attractive copy. Armorial bookplate with motto 'conjunctio firmat' but the name [John Carver] removed. ESTC T63206. Corrected second edition of Walpole's original bibliography, enlarged by 17 noble authors. The first edition had been published the previous year at the Strawberry Hill Press. Walpole had sold the copyright to the Dodsleys and Graham for two years. In 2005 Walpole's own copy of the second edition was sold: 'This copy is corrected and enlarged as I intend it should be printed for the last time. Hor. Walpole'. The 26 added authors (7 nobles, 6 minor writers, 2 peeresses, 6 Scots, 5 Irish) & much of this manuscript material were included in the first volume (c. 1771) of the abortive Strawberry Hill Press edition of Walpole's collected works in quarto (of which only a few copies are known). Walpole continued to add new material, however, but never saw his definitive edition realized.

182 x 112 mm. (7 1/4 x 4 1/2"). Complete with the statement of the work's entry in the Hall-Book of the Company of stationers following the dedication in volume I. Two volumes. . Attractive contemporary polished calf, covers with double gilt fillet border, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with fleuron centerpieces, leaf cornerpieces, one red and one black morocco label, marbled endpapers. Title pages with engraved printer's device depicting the house at Strawberry Hill, volume I with engraved frontispiece by C. Grignion showing Earl Rivers presenting printer William Caxton to King Edward IV. VERSO OF FRONT FREE ENDPAPER INSCRIBED: "The Author's kind Present to / J. Campbell." Hazen 3; ESTC T63207. â First volume with one-inch crack to head of front joint, boards with minor chafing and scratches, light offsetting from frontispiece to title page, isolated faint foxing, other trivial imperfections, but quite an appealing copy--bright and clean internally, and in attractive unrestored bindings. This is a valuable work from an important press, this copy being distinguished as given by the author to a writer who receives special approbation in the text. Although Walpole's literary reputation rests principally upon his voluminous correspondence, he also produced a number of substantial books, including the present catalogue, with its useful collection of biographical accounts and engraved portraits. As a carefully researched and honest assessment of the literary contributions of a significant number of lesser-known writers (figures whose rank in society was generally greater than their reputations and abilities as authors), the work is of particular interest. Taking its name from Walpole's beloved estate, the Strawberry Hill Press would occupy a prominent place in the printing history of its period. Walpole said that he modeled his press after that of Aldus, the Estiennes, and the Elzeviers, with results that Plomer says were "far above any of the other private press work of the 18th century." The recipient here, "J. Campbell," is very likely to be historian John Campbell (1708-75), whose writings Walpole admired and who is praised in the text as "one of the ablest and most beautiful Writers of this Country." Campbell wrote histories of various nations and their colonial territories, especially relating to the East and West Indies, and in 1744 published his "Political Survey of Britain," a substantial work that greatly advanced his reputation. The inscription here has been checked against and matches that in Campbell's letters at the British Library.
