Hardcover - 4th printing. Introduction by Harriet Monroe, founder of Poetry Magazine, in which she comments that William Butler Yeats asked Lindsay 'What are we going to do to restore the primitive singing of poetry?' and that this book is Lindsay's response. The first section of this volume contains poems to be read aloud, including the long title poem. Other sections are on the Christmas tree, moon poems, including some for children, and - on a more somber note - it ends with a section titled "War - 1914." xv, 159 pp. plus 5 pp publisher's ads. Near fine in mustard yellow cloth boards, with gilt lettering and red and navy decorations on front cover and spine (some toning to pages and endpapers, cover is bright and attractive).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good -. Reprint. INSCRIBED. 159pp. Small octavo [19.5 cm] Yellowish brown cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles and decorative red and blue ink stamped designs on the front cover. There are several ink stains on the front cover, most notably a 3 cm long red smudge on the front cover near bottom corner. Spine slightly rolled, corners bumped and scuffed. Inscribed by the author in black ink on front free end paper, "Merry Christmas- this year- next year- and every year better- is my wish for Miss Harriet [?] -- Sincerely, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay. Springfield, Illinois, December 25, [1917?]". Recent literature has criticized this work as engaging in "romantic racism", in which blacks are both lauded for their musical prowess while also demeaned for perceived drunkenness, violence, and savagery. While Lindsay posited that the third section of "The Congo" was a revolutionary message of hope for goodwill between races, his work was criticized by Dubois for its ignorance of black complexity while purporting itself to be an important work on the black experience.

MacMillan NY 1915 (reprint). (xvi) 159pp, 8 ads. Decorative tan cloth covers, vgc. Inscribed to Marion Angell, signed & dated March 12, 1919. Lindsay's famous poem "Congo" subtitled "A Study of the Negro Race" is his best-known work, and his many successful recitations of the poem truly gave "voice" to the poet's art in the United States and prefigured the later Beat/Jazz collaborations.
