Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Description of Millenium Hall And the Country Adjacent Together with the Characters of the Inhabitants and Such Historical Anecdotes and Reflections As May Excite in the Reader Proper Sentiments of Humanity, and Lead the Mind to the Love of Virtue was written by Sarah Scott (1723 - 1795). In 1762,Scott published her novel, A Description of Millenium Hall. From Wikipedia, 'The book takes the form of a frame tale and a series of adventures, as each resident of the female Utopia relates how she arrived at Millenium Hall. The adventures are remarkable for their reliance on a nearly superstitious form of divine grace, where God's will manifests itself with the direct punishment of the wicked and the miraculous protection of the innocent. In one tale, a woman about to be ravished by a man is saved, literally by the hand of God, as her attacker dies of a stroke. The Hall the characters live in is a model of mid-century reform ideas. All the women have crafts with which to better themselves. Property is held in common, and education is the primary pastime.'.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 4th Edition. Fourth edition. 8vo. (6.9 x 4.4 inches). Engraved frontis showing two men viewing Millenium Hall through several trees, engraved by A. Walker. ii, 262pp. Some very light spotting to a few pages but overall a very good copy in a recent period style binding of half tan calf. Spine with raised bands. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Marbled paper on boards. ---- An important early feminist utopian novel. The most famous work of Sarah Scott (1720-1795), Millenium Hall describes a female utopia, free from male violence, where property is held in common and a community of women conduct lives devoted to artistic pursuits and education, Christian virtues, and philanthropy. Through its focus on female equality, education and friendship, and with the Hall forming a model of mid-century reform ideas, it provided a fictional embodiment of the ideals of the Blue Stockings Society, of which Scott was a member and of which her sister, Elizabeth Montagu, was leader. A successful work in its time, it went through four editions by 1778, and in recent years has undergone a resurgence of scholarly and public interest, with a renewed focus on its early feminist meaning. Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Good Only. None (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce first edition of this significant and popular novel. Scarce and only comes up at auction every ten years or so. This work is invariably browned and foxed and often damaged as it was widely read at the time and this particular copy is rather better than most. Could do with a sympathetic rebind but would make a very good copy once done. Published anonymously, authorship was often considered to be Oliver Goldsmith. However, scholars now agree the revised the text for the second edition and the true author is Sarah Scott. With an illustrated frontispiece. Bound with one leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Sarah Scott was an English novelist, translator, social reformer and member of the Bluestockings. A Description of Millenium Hall is her most famous work. The novel is set in a utopian community of women devoted to artistic pursuits and education, Christian virtues and philanthropy. It provided a fictional example of the ideals of the bluestocking circle. It was extremely popular upon initial publication, going through four editions by 1778. An interest in this novel has been revived in the 21st century among feminist literary scholars. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In a full calf binding. Externally, worn. Boards, extremities and spine are all rubbed. Loss to head and tail of spine. Front board has detached but present. Rear joint is starting but firm with the hinge tender with cords showing. Prior owner's inscription to recto of front endpaper and to recto of front blank. Selbourne library stamp to verso of title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with instances of scattered spots throughout. Good Only. book.

Erstausgabe
First edition of this scarce early feminist utopian novel, in which the author fictionalized her experiences living and working alongside women in Bath as an alternative model to sustaining oneself through marriage. Having freed themselves from the tyrannies of gender expectations, the women in the story turn towards educating the wider community, sheltering the homeless, and relieving poverty and animal cruelty. "Millenium Hall gives utopian fictional form to the Anglican social ideals of what by this time was known as the 'bluestocking circle'" (ODNB). The bluestockings were an informal, women-centred literary discussion group led by the author's sister Elizabeth Montagu (1718-1800), who is lightly satirized in the work as the status-driven Lady Brumpton. While Montagu staked out her position as a star of literary London, Sarah Scott (née Robinson, 1720-1795) lived on the outskirts of the republic of letters, writing novels, histories, and translations while tending to her sickly philanthropist friend Lady Barbara Montagu (c. 1722-1765) in Bath. As a result, Scott paradoxically became "the most published yet one of the least known of the first-generation bluestocking writers in their time" (Kelly, p. 18). The anonymously published work is credited to its male narrator, "A Gentleman on his Travels" who relates his discovery of the women's commune living at Millenium Hall. Scott's authorship, however, was widely known, and the work proved her greatest success, reaching its fourth edition in 1778. "Her fictional writing does not repeat itself in form but takes on new technical issues with each title. Her concerns are always those of proto-feminism: the problems of middle-class women disadvantaged by poverty, lack of beauty, and absence of outlets for their talents, and the plight of lower-class women and the disabled" (Orlando). This copy has an appropriate contemporary ownership inscription on the front free endpaper which reads "Ann Allison, the gift of Mrs Steel". ESTC T107679; Halkett & Laing II, p. 41 (erroneously arguing for Oliver Goldsmith's authorship over Sarah Scott and others); Negley 1016; Sargent 1762. Vita Fortunati & Raymond Trousson, eds, Dictionary of Literary Utopias, 2000, pp. 393-4; Gary Kelly, intro., Millenium Hall, 1995. Duodecimo (164 x 96 mm). Contemporary calf, unlettered spine and covers ruled in gilt, blind roll on board edges. Steel-engraved frontispiece of two men discovering Millenium Hall, woodcut head- and tailpieces. Publisher's 2-page catalogue, dated 14 January 1762, at end. Binding professionally refurbished and presenting well, small hole to rear free endpaper. A very good copy.
