Condition : very good. - Charles-Irénée Castel de Saint-Pierre, né le 18 février 1658 au château de Saint-Pierre-Église et mort le 29 avril 1743 à Paris, est un écrivain, diplomate et académicien français, précurseur de la philosophie des Lumières. Il est surtout connu pour avoir pensé qu'un monde sans guerre était possible. Négociateur du traité d'Utrecht (1712-1713), il s'inspire de ses discussions difficiles pour concevoir le Projet de paix universelle entre les nations qui le rendra célèbre. Cet ouvrage, qui influencera Jean-Jacques Rousseau, qui constitue une importante vision d'une unification européenne, semble même avoir inspiré les créateurs de la Société des Nations et de l'ONU. Il serait aussi à l'origine de l'idée du droit d'ingérence. En 1718, durant la Régence, il publié La Polysynodie ou la pluralité des conseils, ouvrage dans lequel il exalte la manière de gouverner du Régent et critique ouvertement la politique du défunt Louis XIV, qu'il juge despotique ; il propose le remplacement des ministres, nommés par le roi, par des conseils élus. Cela lui vaut d'être exclu de l'Académie française à l'unanimité, sauf pour le vote de son compatriote Fontenelle, qui proteste contre cette mesure extrême. Son fauteuil demeure toutefois vide jusqu'à sa mort, le Régent ne voulant pas qu'il soit remplacé. Condition : very good copy. Keywords : HISTORY, French Revolution.

*** Seconde édition, (la première Londres, 1718), augmentée de deux longues lettres à Mr. de Sacy : "On m'accuse d'avoir voulu diminuer la gloire du feu Roi [Louis XIV]. Le philanthrope abbé de Saint-Pierre (1658-1743), auteur de nombreux projets de réformes était très favorable à la polysynodie, une forme de gouvernement qui venait d'être abandonné. La polysynodie, (effective de 1715 à 1718), remplaçait chaque secrétaire d'État par un conseil où haute noblesse, magistrats et notables siégeaient. Deux feuillets de la préface (A6 et A7) ont été reliés une nouvelle fois à la fin du volume. On lit une différence au feuillet A7 placé à la fin : "le feu Roi . n'était le plus souvent secouru que par un seul homme, qui non seulement était moins éclairé qu'un Conseil entier". La fin de cette phrase est absente dans le feuillet relié en-tête qui est donc un carton. L'auteur a marqué sans doute par là, sa prudence. Une prudence qui n'a pas empêché le Régent d'exclure l'abbé de Saint-Pierre de l'Académie Française. De cette exclusion, il en est question dans une note à la plume en regard du titre qui reproduit un passage des 'Confessions' de Jean-Jacques Rousseau, pour qui ce "Discours" est "plein de raison et mérite bien d'être lu."
