Cloth. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). An uncommon copy of Southey's famous prose anthology, The Doctor. Edited by His son-in-law, John Wood Warter. New edition, complete in one volume. Adorned with a beautifully engraved vignette to the title page, as well as two further plates, one of which is coloured. Perhaps Southey's most enduring contribution to literary history is the children's classic The Story of the Three Bears, the original Goldilocks story, which first saw print in Southey's prose collection The Doctor. Rebound in a maroon cloth binding with gilt detailing to the front board. Externally, some rubbing and bumping to the cloth, as well as sunning and wear to the spine. Both hinges are mildly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound and bright, with only the odd spot. Neat ink signature to both the front free endpaper and the half title. Binder's label to the rear pastedown. Good. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. 8vo. pp xxv, 392.16pp publishers advertisements dated June 1837 tipped in at front. Original publisher green textured cloth, original printed paper spine label. First edition of Southey's anonymous miscellany The Doctor, volume 4 only - however it is best best known for containing the first appearance in print of "The Three Bears." Eric Quayle wrote "Any text of the story published before 1850 is a rare and desirable possession" "The Three Bears," based on a traditional tale, appears in Volume IV on pages 318-26; this version has a "Little Old Woman" instead of Goldilocks. Goldilocks would not appear as such until 1904; in a 1858 version, she is called "Silver-Locks" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 524). Different typefaces and type sizes are used in Southey's version to indicate different characters: for example, Papa Bear's dialogue is printed in large Gothic type. Neat name on front pastedown dated 1838. Clean very good copy, spine label slightly chipped and slightly tanned.

Erstausgabe
FIRST EDITION (except vol. III, 2nd edn). Half title & col. front vol. VII, titles printed in red & black, errata slip vol. VI; a few minor internal marks. Contemp. full tan calf, gilt spines, maroon labels; a little rubbed, sl. marked, vol. V sl. chipped at head of spine. An attractive set. Southey's wonderfully sprawling final work, described in the Encyclopaedia Britannica as 'a rambling miscellany packed with comments, quotations, and anecdotes', was begun in 1834 as a series of observations, essays and stories, loosely connected by the fictional narrator Dr Dove. It famously contains the first telling of 'The Story of the Three Bears' in chapter 129.
