Very good. Scarce. FIRST EDITION of Robert Morres' sermons delivered as part of the Bampton Lecture series. "The Bampton Lectures at the University of Oxford, England, were founded by a bequest of John Bampton. They have taken place since 1780. Included is an extract from the last Will and Testament of the late Reverend John Bampton (d.1751), Canon of Salisbury, wherein the lectures series is established, and which started in 1779 with its inaugural lecture." "They were a series of annual lectures; since the turn of the 20th century they have typically been biennial. They continue to concentrate on Christian theological topics. The lectures are traditionally been published in book form. On a number of occasions, notably at points during the 19th century, they attracted great interest and controversy" (Wikip.). Morres' lectures center on moral philosophy, natural philosophy, Christian faith and Bible study. For example: "Reasonableness of Faith because of the Ability and Veracity of man â Â" these considered." Of the institution of theological learning, he addresses "Religious Establishments â Â" necessity of Government in general â Â" of ecclesiastical â Â" each Church independent â Â" subordination of ecclesiastical institutions to civil government â ¦" and of Heresy: "Recapitulation â Â" inference â Â" farther remarks of Heresy â Â" Means and Motives of guarding against it, viz. the Scriptures â Â" the Duty and Happiness of man." / Robert Morres, M.A., son of a doctor, late Fellow of Brasen Nose College. "Brasenose College (BNC), officially The Principal and Scholars of the King's Hall and College of Brasenose in Oxford, is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom."
