From Preface: The present volume will be found to comprise, with some exceptions, which will be more particularly adverted to hereafter, the whole of the Essays contributed by Addison to the "Spectator." If the value of an Author, and his final rank in the permanent literature of his country, may be estimated by the extent of his influence on the manners and the literature of his time, this illustrious moralist is entitled to take the very first rank among didactic writers. Scattered foxing. Fore-edge of some pages badly opened with a paper knife by some long forgotten reader. Two small tears in cloth of spine. Corner tips a bit rubbed. A little light scattered foxing. Otherwise a clean, vintage copy. 575 pp. 8vo. green cloth stamped in gold and black. Frontispiece from wood engraving.

Buchdruck vom Bleisatz. Alexander Charles Ewald (* 1842 in Jerusalem, Osmanisches Reich; ? 20. (Wikipedia) In deutscher Sprache. Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). A collection of essays by founder of 'The Spectator' magazine, Joseph Addison. Edited by English historian, John Richard Green. Green began a religious career in the church and served various cures in London before turning to writing. He wrote several historical works including 'A Short History of the English People'. There are over eighty essays to this volume including Addison's 'Sir Roger De Coverley' series, his Court essays from the Tatler and several more humorous subjects such as humours of the town, the country and fashion. Addison was an essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He wrote several political pieces commissioned by the government and was Under-Secretary of State for some time. Today, Addison is most commonly remembered as an essayist. He began writing essays when his childhood friend, Richard Steele, started 'The Tatler'. Addison made some contributions to 'The Tatler' however, upon its discontinuation the duo began 'The Spectator' and Addison penned 274 of the 555 essays. In a red full calf prize binding with Hamilton house crest gilt stamped to the front board. Externally, smart with a few marks to the boards and spine. Rubbing to the joints. Prize bookplate to front endpaper, awarded to Hermione Pyke, Christmas 1907. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
