Originalleinen. Zustand: Gut. XVIII, 712 / XVII, 758 S., Abb. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / perfect condition - Preface -- This volume completes my European Discovery of America. The first volume, The Northern Voyages, which the Oxford University Press published in 1971, covered voyages to Canada and the northern United States to 1600; and, as a supplement, Atlantic Press brought out next ear my Samuel de Champlain, Father of New France. Now I return to Columbus, of whom I have been an almost lifelong student, and carrv the story of the Southern Voyages down to 1616 when Le Maire and Schouten discovered Cape Horn. The core of this volume, however, relates to the work of three of the greatest navigators of history, Columbus, Magellan, and Drake, and the story of their voyages is told greater detail than those of the others, partly because of their im-portance, but also because we know more about them. My readers should not expect accounts of the great conquests such as Mexico, Peru, New Granada, and Brazil - or of the colonial wars such as the Franco-Spanish quarrel over Florida. In a book of this scope I have had to limit the story to voyages - to how the conquerors got here. And much of what appeared on shipbuilding and navigation in my Northern Voyages needs no repetition.
