This ideal gift is now complete with an 80-minute audio CD featuring original recordings of 29 inspiring poems, read by their authors. Here the listener will find beautiful verse by the greatest poets of the modern era, including: W.B Yeats' The Lake Isle of Innisfree; Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening; Wallace Stevens' Not Ideas About the Thing But the Thing Itself; T.S. Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock; John Betjeman's A Shropshire Lad and The Licorice Fields at Pontefract; W.H. Auden's The Shield of Achilles; Dylan Thomas' A Refusal to Mourn.; Ted Hughes' Thrushes; Sylvia Plath's Daddy; and a special full-length reading of Howl by Allen Ginsburg, among many other much-loved classics. Accompanying the CD is a beautifully illustrated book containing over 150 complete and unabridged poems, covering Thomas Hardy, W.B. Yeats, D.H. Lawrence, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, The War Poets, E.E. Cummings, W.H. Auden, Dylan Thomas, Ezra Proud, Sylvia Plath, and many more. Each chapter comprises introductory quotations, an illustration, a biography of the poet, a selection of their key poems and simple explanations of the themes. With an introduction that suggests ways to appreciate the poems, and a glossary that demystifies the concepts and movements of modern poetry, The Great Modern Poets and CD is an ideal welcome to the pleasures and insights poetry has to offer. 8vo, pp. [viii], 211, [8] contents, [3] index, [1] errata, [1] advertisement; with a fine folding plate opposite p. 1; some light dampstains; contemporary panelled calf, rubbed, upper cover detached. First edition in English, reissue: comparison shows that these are the same sheets as the edition of 1705 (which also had Smith's imprint), with an updated title page. The book is attributed to Fénelon, but is in fact by François de Callières (1645-1717), diplomat and writer, and suggestions have been made that it influenced Swift's Battle of the Books: see the edition by Guthkelch and Nichol Smith (1958). However, more recent scholarship dismisses this - Frank Ellis's edition (2006) quotes Herman Real to the effect that aside from the title, the two books 'have nothing in common'. The identity of the translator does not seem to be known. Provenance. Marcus Gage (inscription on title page), presumably Marcus Gage of Streevehill, co. Derry (1755-1815), or his son (1796-1856).
