Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing. From the library of James Booth, former Professor of English at the University of Hull, biographer, editor and former colleague of Philip Larkin, with his pencilled name to the title page. Original light grey cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt sharp, the contents clean throughout, without spots, marks or toning that often affect this book. Small mark on the inside margin of p. 31 (some glue from the binding process); the text is unaffected. Complete with the bright, unclipped dustwrapper (£1.40 net to the front flap), rubbed to the upper spine tip and a touch to the upper outer corner but without spotting, fading, or toning. An attractive copy. The front flap of 'High Windows', the poet's final collection, states simply that "No introduction is necessary to this new collection of poems by Philip Larkin. It is his first since 'The Whitsun Weddings' (1964)". It is perhaps the finest, and certainly the darkest, of Larkin's four collections. The first edition was published on 3rd June 1974 in an edition of 6,142 copies which, according to Charles Monteith, sold out in three weeks, a record, in Faber's experience, for a cased volume of new verse. (Bloomfield A10a). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Erstausgabe
Uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, first printing. Publisher's original light blue card covers printed in black. An excellent fine copy, the binding square and firm, the covers with just a hint of toning at the extremities. The contents, with a small ink mark to the upper margin of page 33 are otherwise clean and bright throughout. Any of Larkin's major poetry collections are rare in proof state. For this, the poet's final collection, the proof comprises 23 poems over 39 pages. The published version includes one additional poem 'Show Saturday' extending the volume to 42 pages. Perhaps the finest, and certainly the darkest, of Larkin's four collections, the first edition was published on 3rd June 1974 in an edition of 6,142 copies which, according to Charles Monteith, sold out in three weeks, a record, in Faber's experience, for a cased volume of new verse. (Bloomfield A10a, for the first edition, no mention of proof copies). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Ray & Kitty, these spare-time fragments, with all good wishes, Philip". The recipient, Raymond Laurence Brett (1917-1996) was Professor of English at the University of Hull from 1952 to 1982, and he chaired the committee that appointed Larkin as University Librarian there in 1955. Following Larkin's death in 1985, Brett remembered how the two men worked together "almost daily" and quickly became friends. "At first I was impressed with the time he spent in his office, arriving early and leaving late. It was only later that I realised that his office was also his study where he spent hours on his private writing as well as the work of the library. Then he would return home and on a good many evenings start writing again. Poetry was not only the most important part of his writing, but an important part of his life for which he was ready to sacrifice almost everything else". High Windows is Larkin's final major poetry collection and includes his celebrated poem "This Be The Verse". "The first printing, according to Charles Monteith, sold out in three weeks, a record - in Faber's experience - for a cased volume of new verse" (Bloomfield). Bloomfield A10a. R. L. Brett, "Philip Larkin: A Psycho-Literary Sketch", About Larkin, no. 7, 1999. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Cloth fresh, gutter partly cracked between first and second gatherings, but sound; unclipped jacket lightly toned, faint creases to extremities; a near-fine copy in near-fine jacket.
