Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Various (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of Robert Surtees' interesting history of the County of Durham, illustrated profusely throughout. The first edition of this work. Complete in four volumes. An extensive history on the County Palatine of Durham, in the North of England, discussing the antiquities of the county. The county city is the cathedral town Durham. The county was an ecclesiastical centre during the Middle Ages. Some of the landmarks of the county include Auckland Castle, Barnard Castle, and Hamsterley Forest. Volume I, published in 1816, contains a general history, and a topographical history. Illustrated with twenty-five plates. Volume II, published in 1820, contains Chester Ward. Illustrated with thirteen plates. Volume III, published in 1823, contains Stockton Ward and Darlington Ward. Illustrated with fourteen plates. Volume IV, published in 1840, contains Darlington Ward and City of Durham. Illustrated with twenty-nine plates. Compiled by Robert Surtees. Surtees was a celebrated historian of his native County Durham, and was well known for studying the antiquities of the county. Collated, complete. Rebacked with the original full tree calf boards and spine lain on. Externally, generally smart. Some rubbing and discolouration to the spines. A little marking to the boards. A very little loss to the front board of Volume II. Some loss to the tail of the spine of Volume IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the plates and to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. book.
