Erstausgabe
[Songbook] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (15 x 12cm), pp.xviii; [2]; 368; [8]. Advertisements to rear. Red borders around text. Publisher's dark green cloth to boards, paper label with black titles to spine. Fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Toning throughout leaves, especially fore margins. Light offsetting to endpapers. Toning to edges. Some marking to cloth, toning to paper label. Light bumping to spine and board extremities. Very good. Part of the Walter Scott 'Canterbury Poets' series; 'every song, ballad, or lyric' included in this edition 'is by an Irish writer, upon an Irish theme, and clearly Celtic in thought and feeling' (introduction). Instead of poetry dealing with abstract themes and language, these songs recorded and sang by the Irish peasantry are what editor Sparling considers to be true Irish nationalistic art.
