"Deacon and priest at Antioch and later patriarch of Constantinople, [he] bears the surname Chrysostom, "golden mouth," in tribute to his great oratorical powers. An impassioned preacher and pastor, Chrysostom was one of the most prolific, important and influential exegetes in the early church. Chrysostom's exegesis of the Bible, in line with the Antiochene school of which is writings are the best representative, has been characterized as logical, literal, sober, restrained, commonsensical, grammatical, detailed and historical. This "matter-of-fact exposition of the text" (Pelikan, 19) is the hallmark of the Antiochene school, in distinction from its rival, the Alexandrian school, which emphasized the allegorical, the symbolic, the spiritual meaning of the text" (McKim).
