Erstausgabe
First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Publisher's green pictorial cloth; gilt titles; 720pp. A straight, attractive copy. Rubbing to front cover pictorial device, at board corners and spine ends; early ownership signature (E.W.R. Ewing; see note below) and later gift inscription to front pastedown; a few small spots of soil to text; overall a firm, attractive copy of a book frequently found wanting. A nice copy of this highly-sought classic of Southern Civil War literature, with excellent provenance - this being the copy of Elbert William Robinson Ewing (1867-1928), a prominent post-War southern apologist who served as Historian-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Despite its equivocal title, the book focuses more or less exclusively on the Confederacy. EICHER 244: "The book's real value lies in the calm, unaffected descriptions of camp life among common soldiers. The many observations of ordinary events are engaging, as are the author's evaluation of Confederate defeat." NEVINS I:109: "Highly quoted and in demand." DORNBUSCH II:1396.

Erstausgabe
First edition of this epic Civil War novel. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in the dust jacket with some chips and inner strengthening. First editions are rare, examples with the original dust jacket are exceptionally so. Johnny Reb and Billy Yank was published in 1905 by Alexander Hunter, a soldier who served in General Robert E. Lee's army from 1861-1865. It details most of the major events of the Civil War. Hunter stated, "There were thousands of soldiers on both sides during the Civil War, who, at the beginning, started to keep a diary of daily events, but those who kept a record from start to finish can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I was so fortunate as to save most of my notes made during the four years of conflict, and in 1865, having no fixed pursuit in life, I spent most of the time in arranging and writing up these incidents of camp life while fresh in my memory.".
