For most of the next seven years he observed, recorded, and lived with Scandinavian natives of all sorts, often on most familiar terms. Three years later he published The land of the midnight sun . In it he combines accounts of traveling by water, coach, and even reindeer-drawn sleigh with numerous little essays on set topics, including geological formations, social ceremonies, schools, local fishing industries, Lapp habitats and costumes, and several museums' (ANB).Provenance: presented to New College Oxford by the 5th Earl of Onslow (1876-1945), diplomat and politicia n.
