This is the first edition, one of a number unauthorised issues by Paul Dawson without "All carefully Examined and Corrected by Mr Desaguliers "on the title page. The text is crisp and clean, few woodcut initials, illustrations, and head and tailpieces in the text, the recto of nine of the plate stubs and one verso contain contemporary ink notes and sketches in a childlike hand. Titlepage within a double rule frame. Edited by Paul Dawson. Sig. b under the gap after " Paul ". [a1v] is an advert leaf. The publisher's advertisement leaves (i.e.sigs. Dd2 & Dd3) are bound before the plates. Foredge of Plate 5 (i.e. single line frame) worn away, with no loss to the illustration, through incorrect folding. Contemporary panelled calf lightly rubbed, the lower forecorner of the lower cover bumped with the board peeping through, the spine with five raised bands, chipped at the head, the panels with rubbed gilt floral decorations, red morocco title label, both joints cracked, with the upper board slightly mobile. Unidentified armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, front and rear endpapers with ink scribbling in a contemporary hand. In all a very good, attractive, crisp and unsophisticated copy in a contemporary binding. There are many variations of this unauthorised edition, with many of them having different collations. When Desaguliers discovered that his pupil Dawson had gone behind his back and published this edition he approached the publisher only to discover that two thirds of the books had been sold. In order to placate Desaguliers they agreed to insert in the remaining unsold copies a Preface which Desagaulers would write. This copy is one of the sold copies without the later inserted Preface.
