SIR CHARLES COCKERELL [1755-1837], Writer for the East India Company, postmaster-general of Bengal, principal partner in a Calcutta mercantile and banking company, mayor of Evesham in 1810 and 1833, represented Evesham in Parliament in 1820 but regarded as a 'lax attender' and never having spoken in debate. In 1831 he was returned at the top of the poll in the general election and again in 1832, sitting as a Liberal until he died in 1837.
