Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Spine ends worn, hairline split at the front joint, scattered foxing, still an attractive, about very good copy. Stirling was a Major General who commanded troops in New Jersey and New York during the Revolutionary War, and was one of the founders, and the first Governor of Columbia College. Inscribed by the author: "Stephen Van Rensselaer Esq. From his friend the Author." The recipient was Stephen Van Rensselaer IV, one of the largest landowners in New York state and the son of Stephen Van Rensselaer III, a Major General in the War of 1812. Duer was a New York Supreme Court Judge, and also served as President of Columbia. A nice association between two notables of the period.
