With the half-title, and final 3pp of "Books Printed for A. Millar". Armorial bookplate of John Rashleigh and modern bookplate of Francis Martin. § First Edition. A working copy, complete but somewhat worn The work is dedicated to the Earl of Chesterfield. Mallet's Life also appeared in the four-volume edition of the Works which Millar published in the same year. Pp.167-197 contain "A Catalogue of all My Lord Bacon's writings, as they are printed in the edition of 1740", being essentially the first bibliography of Bacon.

Mallet was a Scottish poet and dramatist. His biography also appeared in the four-volume edition of the works of Francis Bacon published by Millar in the same year. First separate edition of Mallet's biography of the philosopher and statesman; "vivid character sketches and spirited narrative make the Life of Bacon the most readable of Mallet's writings" (ODNB). The biography was written to preface the four-volume edition of Bacon's works published the same year. The biography was well-received, and this separate edition was afterwards published by subscription in 500 copies. "The Life was Mallet's first attempt at historiography and biography and would earn him the praise of Edward Gibbon as one of the important historiographers of the mid-century" (Jung, p. 105). Bound without half-title. Unclear 19th-century signature to front pastedown, title verso, and terminal page. 'Vivid character sketches and spirited narrative make the Life of Bacon the most readable of Mallet's writings and induce regret that he could not or would not complete his life of Marlborough' (ODNB).
