Erstausgabe
Brown cloth-covered boards. Zustand: Good condition. 1st edition. Set in Bembo. The binding design is based upon a Renaissace binding of ca. 1508 in the British Museum. Translated with an introduction by George Bull. Frontispiece (black chalk drawing) - Michelangelo in old age by Danielle da Volterra. The 'Life of Michelangelo' (as expanded in the second edition of Vasari's 'Lives' to become the fullest account yet published of an artist's career) clearly and boldly reflects the almost mystical reverence in which Michelangelo was held, after the painting of the Sistine Chapel, as the greatest living artist. Vasari's fondness for anecdote, for anxiety to show how well he knew the inspired Buonarroti, and his curious eye for colourful and amusing incident make the 'Life' a fascinating narrative not only of Michelangelo's high claims and almost superhuman achievements but also of his marvellous humanity, in its frustrations, affections and eccentricities. Illustrated with 31 black and white photographs (with facing description) of Michelangelo's works selected by Peter Murray. With notes. 158 pag. text. Size: 23cmx17cm.
