Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression, secretarial presentation copy, with a printed "From the Author" slip tipped to the front endpapers of vol. I, and with the recipient's ownership inscription beneath, "Loveridge, Penarth". This is presumably Florence Emily Loveridge (née Neale, 1879-1951), who is credited with providing the photography for four of the illustrations in the work. Loveridge married Thomas Lawton Loveridge (1878-1965) in Penarth a few months prior to publication. The front free endpaper has the subsequent ownership inscription, "Oxton, 1924": the Neales owned Oxton House, Kenton, Devon, from around 1915 until its sale in 1925. Loveridge and her family showed Wallace great hospitality the year preceding publication. Loaning him their home, and acting as his guide and chauffeur, the Neales made it possible for Wallace to provide an account of some of the sights he describes in this book. A contemporary review of the work, laid in, states that "the 'Maen Llia', in the Upper Vale of Neath, also attracted [Wallace's] attention, and (through the kindness of Miss Florence Neale, of Penarth) he gives a representation of this 'huge erect slab of old red sandstone', as a full page illustration". On his departure, Wallace wrote to Loveridge's father, the naturalist Joshua John Neale (1854-1919), thanking him "for your great kindness. Your son [Joshua Symonds] took us for several very interesting excursions especially that to the Brecon road where we got a very fine view of the Beacons". A photograph of the Beacons, taken by Joshua Symonds Neale, is illustrated facing p. 165. The illustrations after Florence Loveridge's photographs are found facing p. 167 and pp. 250-51. There are naturalist associations in both the Neale and Loveridge families: Joshua John Neale "was an early pioneer of the study of wildlife on the islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm" (Pembrokeshire). Meanwhile, Florence's brother-in-law Arthur Loveridge (1891-1980) was a curator at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, and led a distinguished career in the study of the amphibians and reptiles of West Africa. A number of species are named in his honour, including afroedura loveridgei and typhlops loveridgei. Wallace is celebrated for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection at the same time as Darwin. The aforementioned newspaper review, titled "A Scientist in Wales", was published in the Welsh newspaper Western Mail on 16 October 1905. It further observes that this autobiography covers Wallace's "first inclinations towards scientific investigation, anecdotal narratives of his numerous travels on the Amazon and in the Malay Archipelago, of his association with Darwin, [and] something about a very large number of the most eminent men of his day". Freeman A237; Wallace Online S729. Pembrokeshire County Council, HDX/1910/23. For Wallace's letters to Joshua John Neale, see also G. W. Beccaloni, ed., Epsilon: The Alfred Russel Wallace Collection, WCP4939 & WCP4940. Two volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt, covers ruled in blind. With 46 plates, including views, portraits, manuscript facsimiles, and 2 folding maps; woodcuts diagrams in the text at vol. II pp. 366-9. Errata slip tipped to first volume at p. 1. Photocopies of two letters from Wallace to Joshua John Neale loosely inserted (see note). Cloth clean, slight rubbing to extremities, vol. I frayed at foot of spine and with cracked front inner hinge, remaining sound, offsetting to outer leaves, foxing to contents, illustrations unaffected. A very good copy.
