Hardcover. Zustand: Good. New York: Kirk & Mercein, 1817. vi, 371 pp. 22 x 13.5 cm. Full stained calf with gilt tooling and titling to spine. Rubbing to spine with some loss of gilt, and some minor chipping to upper corners of spine label. Rubbing and light scuffing to boards, with bumping and some wear to corners. Toning to edges of text block and endpapers, with toning and foxing throughout. Some light dampstaining to head and tail of text block. 8 mm oval hole in rear free endpaper caused by insect damage. 5 cm tear to hinge of front endpapers. This particular copy has a frontispiece portrait of Fulton, but it is not the original image that would have been in the published book. This copy is also extra-illustrated with five plates from a more modern edition, or possibly from another book altogether. The plates are as follows: a holograph letter of Fulton about the engine, 1804; another portrait of Fulton from the collection of Dr. Gilbert L. Parker of Philadelphia; a diagram of Fulton's submarine, "Nautilus", 1798; Fulton's drawings for his first steamboat, 1803; and "The Steamboat" as she appeared in 1807. Only about one-third of the fold-out chart is present, with the missing two-thirds being replaced with a handwritten copy of the original. Binding sound. . Hard Cover. Good.

First editions of both works. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled boards. Spine lettered Life of Fulton & West with lovely jewelry-clasp-like filigree geometric decoration. Very good condition. Frontispiece portraits in both works, tissue guard over portrait of West. Preliminaries of the first title, including frontispiece, foxed. Folding table in the first work with small tear along one fold. Although it might seem that they were disparate individuals, one remembered as an inventor, the other as an artist, their lives overlapped considerably. Both were born before American independence, both first pursued careers outside the United States, and both were extremely successful in their own fields. Fulton lived with West in London for several years; he first worked as a painter but his interests increasingly moved toward technology and invention. Besides developing the first commercially successful steamboat Fulton is credited with building the first submarine and designing practical naval torpedoes.
