Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). Samuel Johnson's influential and widely popular collection of short biographies on eminent poets of the eighteenth century. Complete in two volumes. 'The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets' is a collection of short biographies and critical appraisals of about fifty-two poets, mostly of the eighteenth century. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece. Johnson has been revered by some as being the only true great critic of English literature of his time. That dictionary remained the standard for one-hundred and fifty years, when the 'Oxford English Dictionary' was published. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Augustus Terry Clarke'. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spines. Light cracks to the joints. Minor spots to the boards. Erstausgabe
First authorized edition. Originally published as prefaces to the expansive collection of English poetry which Johnson had edited, these essays are here collected and published as a work in their own right. This edition, also the first London edition, follows the unauthorized Dublin edition of 1780-81. "It was the simplest in style and expression of all his literary labours, the subject appealed to every man of letters in the three kingdoms, and it abounded in anecdote and in criticism. Much of the charm of The Lives of the Poets lies in the anecdotes and reminiscences which Johnson has embodied in them. He had passed many years of life in the company of men of letters, and his retentive memory preserved the criticisms and the facts which had fallen from their lips" (Courtney & Smith, pp. 129-32). Chapman & Hazen, p. 159; Courtney & Smith, pp. 141-2; ESTC T146734; Rothschild 1265. Four volumes, octavo (211 x 125 mm). Mid-19th-century half roan, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled sides, edges yellow, blue silk bookmarkers. Engraved portrait frontispiece after Joshua Reynolds in vol. I (in the state without the imprint; no priority). Vol. IV bound without the rear ad leaf and the spine label leaf. Early ownership inscription sometime erased from front pastedown of first volume; old typed cataloguing description loosely inserted. Spines sunned, marbled sides rubbed, edges worn, splits to front joint of vol. II and to most inner hinges, remaining sound, sporadic foxing and creasing of leaves, a couple of annotations in pen and pencil. A very good set.
