Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Not so long ago Emilio Brentani was a promising young author. Now he is an insurance agent on the fast track to forty. He gains a new lease on life, though, when he falls for the young and gorgeous Angiolina-except that his angel just happens to be an unapologetic cheat. But what begins as a comedy of infatuated misunderstanding ends in tragedy, as Emilio's jealous persistence in his folly-against his friends' and devoted sister's advice, and even his own best knowledge-leads to the loss of the one person who, too late, he realizes he truly loves. Marked by deep humanity and earthy humor, by psychological insight and an elegant simplicity of style, As a Man Grows Older (Senilità, in Italian; the English title was the suggestion of Svevo's great friend and admirer, James Joyce) is a brilliant study of hopeless love and hapless indecision. It is a masterwork of Italian literature, here beautifully rendered into English in Beryl de Zoete's classic translation.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First U.k. Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo pp xiv, 245. Translated by Beryl de Zoete. Original publisher's oatmeal patterned cloth lettered dark green spine and on front cover. The front inner flap quotes this extravagant claim from The Telegraph - ".perhaps in the final estimate the most important work of Mr James Joyce will not be Ulysses, but the discovery of Italo Svevo, the Italian novelist." First published to little notice in Italy in 1898, but later championed by James Joyce after he read it while tutoring Svevo in English in Trieste 1907 - only published in English several years after Svevo's death, this first edition in English features an introduction by Stanislaus Joyce (also in Trieste 25 years later, who discusses his brother's championing of Svevo's work, and hints that Leopold Bloom is in part modelled on Svevo. With the rare acetate d/w with printed inner folds. Very good indeed in slightly used vg- dust jacket (some loss) with clean very good printed inner folds. No inscriptions, not price-clipped.
