By Giles Jacob, (baptised 22 November 1686 8 May 1744), a British legal writer and literary critic. This was his last work. Chapters include 'Of the laws relating to marriage, bastardy, infants, ideots, lunaticks' and 'Of publick offences, treason, murder, felony, burglary, robbery, rape, sodomy, forgery, perjury, etc, and their punishment'. With previous owner's ink inscription to rear free endpaper of one John McBride. In a calf binding. Externally, sound with slight cracking to joints. Internally, firmly bound except for starting to rear free endpaper. Slight loss to head of title page, not affecting text. Some spots throughout. Good. book.

Jacob, though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible, was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications, such as The Common Law Common-Placed (1726) and Treatise of Law.

It had been published in six London editions previously to this New York edition. Giles wrote several other legal works including in 1729, "A New Law Dictionary". In 1768, Hugh Gaine was appointed public printer to the Province of New York. Soon after, he became the official printer of the City of New York. Evans 10935.
