A charmingly-bound set, from the Library of English Classics. Originally spelled Le Morte Darthur from the Middle French for "The Death of Arthur", this, a 15th-century Middle English prose reworking by Sir Thomas Malory tells the tale about the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table, along with their respective folklore. In order to tell a "complete" story of Arthur from his conception to his death, Malory compiled, rearranged, interpreted and modified material from various French and English sources. Today, it is one of the best-known works of Arthurian literature.

Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. FIRST 2 VOLUME EDITION. Small Crown 4to. (9.3 x 6.8 inches). xxx, 439; xxii, 531 pp. Originally issued as four slim quarto volumes in a limited edition in 1910-11, this is the first issue in this format and is complete in 2 thicker volumes. Beautifully Illustrated with 36 fine full colour plates by Russell Flint. Publishers green cloth with elaborate blind tooled decoration to the front boards and spines, which are also ruled and lettered in gilt. In the original scarce dustwrappers with colour plates mounted onto the front panels. The cloth boards are a bit dulled and there is a near one-inch tear, without loss, to the top of the spine of volume one, but the gilt is still strong and bright. The dustwrappers are faded to the spines, which have a few very minor chips to the extremities, but are generally in very good condition and sets with them present are uncommon. Overall a very good set of this interesting and beautiful edition, which includes a Bibliographical Note by the editor, A. W. Pollard, Caxton's preface to the original edition of 1485, a glossary, and an index. -- More photos available on request.

Vorsatz fehlt, Besitzereintrag auf Schmutztitel ausgestrichen; Einbände berieben u. bestoßen, Doppelseiten-Tafeln gebräunt, Vol II, tlw. nicht beschnitten). Vol I: LXIV, 455 P. 1 of 1.500 ordinary copies. Incl. Book I - Book IX. (from 12 Books), 1 frontisp-plate, 11 plates; Vol. II: P. 291 - 664. 1 of 300 copies on Dutch hand made paper. Incl. Book VIII - Book XI., without frontisp.-plate, 5 plates, 2 double-page plates. The book was issued in 12 parts in wrappers, with the purchaser given the choice of sending it back to the publisher, who bound them in vellum or cloth, or to a binder of their own.In 1892, seeking to emulate the books of the Kelmscott Press, John M. Dent commissioned the 20-year-old Beardsley to produce this edition, work that took the young artist 18 months to complete. "In Le Morte d'Arthur Beardsley learnt his job, but the result is no bungling student's work. If he had never illustrated another book, this edition of Morte d'Arthur could stand as a monument of decorative book illustration" (Lewis, pp. 148-9). The work was first published in 12 monthly magazine instalments between June 1893, and mid-1894. "Aubrey Beardsley's Morte Darthur was one of the most original and certainly one of the most controversial of the nineteenth-century artistic reinterpretations of Malory" which "established Beardsley as the voice of the 1890s" (Tepa Lupack, Chapter 4). "Often shockingly overt in their sexuality and eroticism, the illustrations rejected the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelites who were Beardsley's original mentors and offered a revisionist and parodic treatment of their medievalism. Ultimately, Beardsley went far beyond his original intention to 'flabbergast the bourgeois' of his day; he also challenged generations of readers and artists to view Arthurian society through his own modernist lens" (ibid.).
