Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A lovely first edition of James Dallaway's study of the history of architecture in England. Written by James Dallaway, an English antiquary, writer, and topographer. This work offers and informative overview of the development of English architecture in the gothic style throughout history. Though dismissing the term 'gothic', Dallaway examines and divides different gothic styles, referencing examples of each. The author also offers a look at the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, with notices on stained glass and ornamental gardening. With the armorial bookplate of Henry Carrington Bowles to the front pastedown. Bowles was a London publisher, map and print seller who worked in partnership with Samuel Carver as 'Bowles & Carver'.Dallaway published a revised edition of this work in 1834. In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing. A touch of rubbing to board perimeters and back strip, otherwise externally lovely. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot. Very Good. book.
