Second part of title continues: With a supplement. Conjectures on the physical condition of the Moon. First edition. Orig. red cloth with rendition of the Temple of Serapis, which figured in Lyell's Principles of Geology, on front cover in gilt. Good copy, binding stained and worn. Copy once belonging to the American astronomer Benjamin Apthorp Gould, with the following presentation inscription on front flyleaf: "Prof. Lewis R. Gibb[e]s, with kind regards of his friend B. A. Gould Cambridge 1854 Sept. 8." Gould maintained a private observatory at his house Cloverden in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The recipient, Lewis R. Gibbes (sometimes mistakenly spelled Gibbs), similarly constructed an observatory in Charleston, South Carolina, which was used by the U. S. Coast Survey. He taught at Charleston College and rendered service to the Confederacy in the taking of Fort Sumter.
